NEW for 2019

We have become weary and bored by all the political chatter. How can we help people in our congregations and friendship circles find hope in the midst of all the political noise?

Sometimes we just aren’t sure what to say or pray for. We want to be faithful and consistent but just aren’t sure how to do so. Seek God for the City 2020is a prayer guide written with the kinds of prayers that will ignite your heart with hope and a certainty that God will fulfill His word. We are all aware that these days are difficult and uncertain. But God is faithful and we are assured that He hears the on-going prayers of His people at all times.

You will not be disappointed in the Seek God 40-day prayer guide. The prayers spring directly from both Old and New Testament scriptures. You will be praying along with thousands of others as they pray through this season with hope and certainty that what God has spoken, He will bring forth. Seek God begins on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, culminating on Palm Sunday, March 5.

Let the prayers in Seek God for the City refresh your hope that God is very much fulfilling His promises in our days. What an honor it is to be united in our prayers as we co-labor together.

Yours for His glory,

Day 37 - Mar 26. "for Christ to gather the nations in worship"

Father, we acknowledge before you that every culture, every nation, tribe, and language, reflects but a part of your image. We long to see that part of your image released in each people group, that you may be worshiped in every tongue and every culture. Free the expressions of worship from every ethnicity in our cities - and as you do that, unite your church in worship of different styles, but with one God to glorify.

Raise up significant, meaningful worship for every ethnicity in our cities, so that you won't be seen as a god of one race or one ethnicity or a god who has forgotten some peoples. You are the God of all, so bring forth worship that will include all peoples in our cities.

Thank you, Father, for creating work and for giving to people the ability and strength to work. Please reveal the honor of working with integrity, and give your people hearts to work as serving you, not our earthly masters. We acknowledge that it is you that we serve and you will be the ultimate source of our reward. Reign over our hearts and minds so that our attitudes will reflect your glory in our work.

Raise your hand on behalf of workers who are being treated unfairly and of those who are currently unable to find work. Come alongside them and draw them to yourself. Create for them work environments that will be all that you mean for them to be.

Father, may you be worshiped in every people group in Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. May your word so spread that not one village, not one people, will be without the testimony of the gospel. Break down the barriers that are preventing the seeds of the gospel from being sown. Change hearts, laws, and times so that your word may be freely proclaimed in each of these countries. Raise up for yourself a witnessing, worshiping church in each people group.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Day 36 - Mar 25. "to be honored even in the midst of war"

Lord Jesus, you said that those who are poor in spirit would be blessed. Please grant to your people humble spirits and a brokenness that points toward your strength. Keep us far from the self-promoting, proud, power-seeking personality so prevalent in our culture. May our spirits of humility and grace be winsome to those who are far from you, that they may be drawn to the One who was broken for them.

Please bring reconciliation to end the longstanding conflicts in our cities - whether racial, socio-economic, cultural, political, etc. Put your church at the forefront of reconciling people to you and to one another. Empower us to live reconciled lives as an example to those outside your family.

Lord, you said that from him to whom much is given, much will also be expected. Please call athletes who are in the public eye to lives of integrity. Protect them from the many temptations that come with their celebrity, their travels, and their lifestyles. For those who have begun down a path that will be destructive for them, please bring them to repentance. Call them to lean into their role as role models in society, especially to our youth. Please grant wisdom, integrity, and grace to coaches at all levels - give them hearts of servant leadership, and most of all, call many of them to yourself.

Father, we pray also for widespread reconciliation in the nations of Lebanon, Libya, and Morocco. Where your name is currently reviled and dismissed, please grant the grace of repentance and draw people to yourself. Call the leaders of these countries to account for the way they are serving and leading their people. Confront them with the truth that you are the one and only God. Humble them now, so that you may lift them up when the Day comes.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Day 35 - Mar 24. "for Christ's followers to seek and make peace"

Father, make of your church a people slow to anger and quick to forgive. Make of us a people who seek to win hearts rather than arguments.  Give us winsome attitudes and an honest concern for the salvation of those who oppose you. Make our actions those that will result in others singing your praises.

Please especially bless, strengthen, and encourage those around the world who are persecuted for their faith. May your grace shine through them and change the hearts of those who persecute them. Surround them with your peace and consistently give them evidence of your presence and sovereignty.

Lord God, please look with your favor on the homeless in our communities.  Provide for their needs of food and shelter.  Raise up training and job opportunities for them. Protect them from the risks of being on the street. And above all, please provide hope - hope for a better future and especially hope in your son Jesus.

Spread the hope of the Gospel, Father, in the lands of Israel, Jordan, and Kuwait. May the message of your word fill these countries. Bring real peace - lasting peace that only you can bring - to areas of conflict in these lands. Break down any barriers to the spread of the gospel and raise up workers to take your word to every people group.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Comment by Steve Hawthorne on March 25, 2015 at 8:20pm

I've been posting comments on the SGFTC2015 Facebook page every other day or so (www.facebook.com/seekgodforthecity/). I usually try to explain more of the biblical underpinnings for the prayers as we were writing them (for those who may not know, I am the author of Seek God for the City). And some ideas about where you can go to pray these things onward. Here's a sample of what I've been posting on Facebook:

Day 36 (March 25). Today we pray concerning war. There’s no question that the best prayer we can pray concerning war is that it would not happen. But what shall we pray in the midst of rocking, roiling wars? It may seem simple, but anyone who has lived through wars will tell you that it is hard to pray for one side or the other to win or lose.

There is, however, one way that we can always pray in the midst of the fog of war’s complexity. We can pray that those who find themselves fighting against God will surrender themselves to His mercy.

And that’s the direction of both of today’s prayers. In the first prayer, the oft-quoted verse that appears to be urging us to contemplative lives (“Be still and know that I am God”) is in fact a forceful declaration that wars amidst the nations must, and will ultimately, cease, as “the Lord of hosts” (God with incomprehensibly immense angelic armies) is exalted. Psalm 46:8-10 makes it clear that the end of war is not one side or the other proclaiming victory. Even though "the Lord of hosts is with us," this does not mean that our side wins the battle. As is often said, God has not come to take sides. He has come to take over. The end of wars will be the spectacle of God Himself exalted in the full beauty of His majesty.

The second prayer from the Gospels may strike some of you as an odd choice:

“Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust” (Luke 20:18).

The context of this passage certainly doesn’t have any direct relationship to matters of violence or war. It does, however, describe God’s ways with those who fight against Him. In this situation, Jesus was confronting people in high positions that were, in Luke’s words, “trying to destroy Him” (Luke 19:47).

He had just quoted a prophecy that promised that the long-expected Messiah would be like a cornerstone (a huge, boulder-sized foundation-rock). But instead of immediately being recognized as the foundation of all God’s work to finish the future, this cornerstone would be rejected and opposed.

Jesus insists that God is putting His chosen cornerstone person in place. Now, Jesus says, there is a choice: People who have opposed Him can “fall upon” that rock, that is, they can surrender in their struggle against God. Those that do “fall upon” Jesus will find that their life radically changes. They “will be broken to pieces” (Luke 20:18), but in the best sense, of no longer obstructing and fighting against the living God. Or, these enemies of God can choose otherwise. If they choose to continue their war against God, they will find that God falls on them, like a mountain crushing a pebble. They will be pulverized.

This may seem harsh, but consider the immense mercy that Jesus is holding out to those who fight against Him. That’s why today’s prayer says,
“We pray for those who have made themselves to be Your enemies. Give them opportunity to be broken and remade. Grant them grace to fall upon You so that they are not ruined and shamed by the coming of Your mighty lordship.”

Day 34 - Mar 23. "To be exalted in troubled times"

Father, we praise you that you are sovereign and in control of human history.  You know the end from the beginning, and you are leading humanity toward the conclusion you have designed. Your kingdom is a victorious kingdom, even though in the world today it is not always visible and in many places is even reviled.

Lord God, give your people faith to trust you in difficult times. Lift our eyes beyond our circumstances, beyond even the circumstances of nations and toward your kingdom. Fill your church with the hope and confidence of eternity, and through that hope empower us to be salt and light to those around us who live in fear. Empower your church to communicate the gospel clearly, especially in places of conflict and uncertainty. Empower your people to follow you without fear.

Please let your blessing fall on those in law enforcement and in our courts. Fill them with your love and grace and give them hearts of servanthood. Protect them from the temptation to abuse power or take advantage of people. Give them wisdom to know and do what is right - make them agents of your justice. Protect their families and bless them with physical and emotional health.

Father, please strengthen the hand of your church to proclaim the gospel in Egypt, Iran, and Iraq. Protect your people who are persecuted in these countries for their faith. Use the violence and uncertainty in these countries to cause people to long for real and objective truth - your truth. Empower your church to represent you with grace. Change the hearts and minds of those who persecute your people - open them to the truth of the gospel. Please change the trajectory of these countries, Lord, that your name may be widely revered and worshiped - as is your due.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Day 33 - Mar 22. "To bring forth peace among peoples"

Lord Jesus, please overcome any tensions between ethnicities in our cities. Where there has been discrimination, bring repentance and forgiveness. Where there has been violence and opposition, bring reconciliation. Where there has been suspicion, bring open-mindedness and inclusiveness.

Reveal yourself, Lord, as the greatest hope for sustained reconciliation and peace between cultures and peoples. Don't let us settle for simple lack of violence and call that peace - instead, bring real understanding and reconciliation.

Lord, you have reconciled people to the Father through your death on the cross, and you have given to your church the ministry of reconciliation. Raise up your church to be reconcilers of races, of cultures, of individuals. We confess that all true reconciliation comes from you, Lord, not from men - so we call on you to send forth your Holy Spirit into areas of tension and to bring reconciliation.

Father, we long to see people reconciled to you in the countries of Algeria, Bahrain, and Cyprus. Reconcile to yourself every culture, every race, every people, tribe, and language in these countries. Send forth the message of reconciliation through your church and demonstrate the reality of that reconciliation through how your people live with and treat others of different ethnicities and cultures.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Day 32 - Mar 21. "For worship from every nation"

Father, please reveal your son to those in every nation who are seeking the truth.  Just like you sent Peter to Cornelius with the truth of the gospel, so send workers to every nation, tribe and language with the truth of your word, and touch the hearts of truth-seekers everywhere. May that be true also in our cities, Lord. Please unite your church in our cities so that you may be seen as the One True God, and not as a God who is divided among denominations. Raise up city-wide worship events across our land and unite your people in praise of you - praise that will attract the attention of those outside your family.

Father, please bring healing, brokenness, and repentance to those who are caught up in bondage to addictions like drugs and alcohol. Break them free from patterns, habits, and relationships that are leading them in a bad direction. Fill their hearts and minds with you to replace the emptiness they are trying to fill themselves. Bring alongside them wise and gifted counselors to intervene and help them. Make of your church a refuge for those who are seeking to turn their lives around.

May you be worshiped, Lord God, in every people, tribe, and language in the countries of Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, and Vatican City. Where there is worship in form only, please bring conviction and encounters with you that will turn that form worship into true heart worship. Where compromise of doctrine or practice have crept into your church, purify her so that you may be known fully both inside her and beyond her walls. Where she lacks resources to do all that you have designed for her, intervene and provide those resources, that she may serve her communities and spread the worship of you.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Day 31 - Mar 20. "For entire cities to seek the living God"

Father, we long to see the type of repentance and revival in our cities that you brought to Nineveh. You sent your prophet Jonah to preach to them, and you opened their hearts to the truth of your word, so that they repented and turned to you. Please do that in our cities today. Raise up prophets and evangelists to proclaim your word and touch the hearts of our leaders and citizens to hear and receive your word. Through the outreach of your church, cause the name of Jesus to be proclaimed and believed. Free the skeptics from their doubts and place in them a hunger for the truth.

Please strengthen and encourage mothers, Lord.  Give them the love, support, and protection they need from their husbands; where this is lacking, please turn the hearts of husbands to their wives. For single mothers, please bless them with a special sense and evidence of your presence. Give mothers wisdom to raise their children, and remind them of the incredible value you place on children, that they may be encouraged in their work. Protect their minds from those who would diminish the value of motherhood and who would insist that they look for their identity and value elsewhere. Give them a strong sense of identity in you, Lord.

Father, please bring mass conversions throughout the cities of Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden. Proclaim your word in the cities and towns of these countries and empower your word to bring salvation as people repent and turn to you. Break down the barriers in the way of people giving their lives to you - whether those are political, cultural - whatever they are. Where your name is denied by leadership, change the course of that leadership; where your word is currently banned or unavailable, raise up workers to proclaim the truth clearly.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Day 30 - Mar 19. "For the gospel to be declared to all peoples"

Father, please lift the vision of your church beyond our own walls to the peoples around us. Give us a passion to reach every people group in our cities and wisdom to create an effective strategy to do that. Put the peoples who are on your heart also on our hearts, Lord.  Send forth your word to every people group in our cities and communities.  Call people from each group into relationship with Jesus.

Father, please put your hand on prisoners in our cities. Bring them to know your Son, and grant them repentance and faith leading to salvation. Protect them from all the evil influences in prison. Give them a sense of purpose and hope for their lives, and perseverance to remain in you in the face of a difficult environment.  Go before those who will soon be released, preparing a path for them that will keep them from falling back into sinful patterns. Prepare a place in your church for them, and grant your people hearts to love rather than judge them, welcoming them into fellowship.  Protect and provide for their families.

Father, please raise up harvesters for all the harvest fields in the countries of Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal. Send forth your word to every people, tribe, and language in these countries - and may your word not return in vain but may it accomplish the purpose for which you send it. Go before the workers that you raise up, revealing yourself in dreams and visions and placing a hunger for the truth in people who have not yet heard the gospel. Break down whatever barriers may exist - language, culture, geography, false religion - whatever might be in the way of people receiving you into their lives. Reap a rich harvest among peoples who do not yet name the name of Jesus'.

For the sake of your Son. Amen.
