A Community of Prayer Champions, Praying Churches, Prayed-for Communities

Ash Wednesday is only a couple of days away, and the annual Seek God for the City campaign is about to begin.  Please join me in asking God to bring honor to himself in our neighborhoods, in our cities, and around the world.  I invite anyone to post prayers for their neighbors, cities, etc.

Day 24 - Friday, March 09

Father, please bring forth justice and mercy throughout our communities, cities, and nation.  Raise up your church as an agent of transformation in our cities so that your word may be known and your mercy may be seen and experienced.  Give our leaders wisdom to change and to dismantle systems that promote and sustain injustice - whether that be social, economic, or other types of injustice.

Lord God, please let your special blessing rest on those who are single in our community today.  Fill them with the joy of knowing you; grant fulfilling and satisfying relationships while keeping singles sexually pure.  For those who desire marriage, raise up the right partners for them and give them your patience to wait.  For those who are single through divorce or death, bring healing and wholeness - walk with them and bring hope for the days ahead.

May your church's light shine brightly in Rwanda, Saint Helena, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and South Africa.  Dispel any areas of darkness in these countries by the light of your word.  In particular, Father, please change the direction of Somalia.  Raise up leadership in this country who will lead in righteousness and integrity, and who will seek your wisdom and direction.  Root out corruption at all levels of government.  Bring about a lasting, just peace that will put the country on the road to healing and reconciliation.  Protect your persecuted church in this country and don't let the light of your word be extinguished; may the Gospel crash through the gates of hell throughout Somalia.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Isaiah 58:6, 8; Matthew 23:23; 1 Corinthians 7:32

Day 25 - Saturday, March 10

Lord God, empower your people and your church to bear the fruit of your Spirit in our communities, in our relationships with neighbors, co-workers, family, fellow students.  Characterize your people by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  As others see these qualities in our lives, open doors for your people to share the Source of this fruit.  Empower your people to live in righteousness and integrity - not the kind that looks down on our neighbors or those outside your family, but the kind that invites them in, that shows forth a life that they would desire.

Please bring healing and wholeness to broken families in our community - whether broken through divorce, through the passing of a loved one, through a prodigal child, or any other circumstance.  Turn the hearts of entire families to you so that they may be reconciled first to you, then to each other.  Raise up believing friends to come alongside grieving and dysfunctional families to share with them faith, hope and love.

Send forth your word, Lord God, to every people, tribe, and village in South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.  In particular, open doors for the gospel to spread throughout Sudan and South Sudan.  Rescue your people from persecution there - raise your hand on their behalf with such power that their persecutors are forced to acknowledge that you indeed are the One True God and to turn their hearts and lives to you.  Grant to your church hearts of forgiveness and grace.  Convert entire households to the faith, and plant your church in each village.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Psalm 85:10-13; Matthew 21:43; Psalm 146:9

Day 26 - Sunday, March 11

Father, please energize your church around the expansion of your kingdom around the world.  Forgive us our consumer-oriented, self-centered priorities; our horizontal focus; our failure to remember that the return of your Son is imminent and serves as our motivation for evangelism and mission.  Make of us bearers of your light, sharers of your truth, and carers for the people in our neighborhoods, families, communities, workplaces, and schools.

May the light of your word shine brightly among peoples around the world who have yet to see the glory of Christ as Savior.  And may that light shine brightly in our community amidst people who have either rejected the gospel or who have never really understood it.  Lord Jesus, you said that spiritual things are spiritually discerned - so please grant that discernment to the lost in our community that they may understand their condition and their need for you.

Father, thank you for the people whom you have brought to our country from places in the world where the Gospel is not freely preached and you are not widely known.  We praise you because you love them enough to bring them to a place where they could learn the truth of your word.  Please provide meaningful friendships for international students, refugees, and business people with believers who can sensitively and accurately share with them the truth of the Gospel.  Place in these visitors open hearts and minds to be receptive to your word.  Draw many of them to yourself, and send them back to their own lands with the light of your word in their hearts.

May the truth of your word spread throughout the nations of Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Bulgaria.  Break down the barriers to the gospel in each of these countries.  You have promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against your advancing word; be faithful to your promise and bring your salvation to every people group in these countries.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Isaiah 49:6; Luke 2:30-32; Deuteronomy 31:12

Day 27 - Monday, March 12

Father, please fill believers in our churches and our communities with a jealousy for your glory that leads us to speak of you often and to share your love, grace, and mercy.  Give us wisdom in the way we act toward outsiders; help us to make the most of every opportunity to share your word.  Make of our words and our lives a consistent testimony to your unfailing love.

May the truth about you be revealed in our society.  Please expose false stereotypes for what they are, and break through misconceptions and other barriers that we have erected that keep people from knowing the real God.  Bring clarity to our speech about you.  Enable us to constantly speak the truth in love, and may the truth of your word be widely received for what it is.

Thank you, Father, for entertainers and artists who have devoted themselves to glorifying you in their craft.  Speak through them to those who need to experience you through a creative side.  Use them in their own circles to speak of you and to live out your love among the nonbelievers in Hollywood, the media, and other places of entertainment.  Expose the slanderous lies of the evil one for what they are, and honor the testimony of your people in these circles through fruit in their lives and ministries.

Grow your church in the Canary Islands, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, the Faeroe Islands, and Finland.  Purify her in doctrine and practice, that she might be a bride spotless and ready for the groom to come.  Infuse her with your love for the lost, and embolden her to testify to that love through words and actions.  Make your church an agent of transformation in society in each of these countries, so that your love may be known and that others may come to know you.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Malachi 1:11; Matthew 6:9; Exodus 35:31-33

Day 28 - Tuesday, March 13

Father, please move your people across this land to prayer - earnest, faithful, trusting prayer.  In response to that prayer, do more than we could ever ask or imagine, so that your name may be glorified in and through your people - especially in the sight  of those who are far from you.  May the ways in which you answer prayer show non-believers that you are the One True God and draw them to believe in you.  May your answers to prayer remove doubts and lead people to faith.

Father, please turn the hearts of parents of unborn children to their babies, so that the lives of the unborn would be protected and valued.  Touch the heart of each these parents and fill them with gratitude and awe at the life you are creating.  Guard their paths and let them not fall into the way of those who would press their own agendas in contradiction to your word.  Bring alongside them believers to walk with them in your way.  Turn the tide of the national conversation to a recognition and value of life in the unborn.

Renew your church in France, Georgia, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, and Ireland.  Purify her in doctrine and practice, and use her as an agent of transformation in all the communities she serves.  Through your church, spread your word to people who do not yet know you, and plant your church among all the yet-unreached people groups in these countries.  Specially bless refugees in Europe who have fled persecution, violence, and war - draw them to yourself through the love of your church.  Resource your church to meet their needs and bless them in your name.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Psalm 65:2, 5; Luke 19:37; Psalm 72:12-14

Day 29 - Wednesday, March 14

Father, please reveal the truth of the Gospel and the uniqueness of Jesus to leaders at all levels in our land.  Many of them do not know you, Lord, but you can still guide their minds with wisdom.  Make your wisdom known to them in ways that will draw their hearts to you.  May your truth permeate our government in all branches at all levels.

Lord God, please prosper businesses and business owners who run their enterprises according to your word.  Grant both spiritual and material fruit to the efforts of businesses like Hobby Lobby and Chik-fil-a and others who honor your name in the ways that they do business.  Grant wisdom to business leaders who are running their businesses for your glory; guide their decisions for the sake of your kingdom.

Spread your word throughout the countries of Italy, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia,  Liechtenstein, Lithuania, and Luxembourg.  Faithfully fulfill your promise that the gates of hell would not prevail against your church in these countries.  Overcome all barriers to the spread of the gospel, and bring soon the day when all peoples in these countries will have an opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Psalm 138:4-5; John 18:37; Deuteronomy 8:18

Day 30 - Thursday, March 15

Father, thank you for the many people groups you have brought to our city.  Thank you for those who are here who might not have had a chance to hear the Gospel in the land they came from.  Thank you for guiding their paths and leading them to a place where the Gospel can be freely proclaimed and where you can be freely worshiped.

Please grant to our churches a vision to reach every people in our city and communities with the Gospel.  Break through our fears, our apathy, anything that is standing in the way of your Word being preached to every nation, tribe, and language represented in our city.  Raise up persons of peace in each of these people groups - people who are open spiritually, who will hear and receive the Gospel, and who will influence others to know you.  Draw to yourself entire families and households of people from other lands so that they can worship you as one, and ultimately have an impact back in their homelands.

Lord Jesus, you said that you came to set the prisoner free.  Please set free those in our community who are currently imprisoned by drugs, alcohol, and other substances.  Heal their minds and their bodies so that they can be free of dependencies on these substances.  Bring alongside them wise counselors and friends to walk with them in their journey.  Most of all, draw them to yourself so that they may know your power to overcome sin.  Raise your hand against those who are being used by Satan to entrap people in lives of substance abuse - drug dealers, gangs, etc.  Bring them to their knees in repentance and change their lives so that they may bring glory to you.

Strengthen your church in Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, and Portugal.  Give your church a vision and passion for reaching every people group in these countries.  Raise up missionaries to take your word to every village and town.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Psalm 96:2; Matthew 28:17-20; Isaiah 14:3

Day 31 - Friday, March 16

Father, please stir up interest in the Gospel throughout our city and through the cities in our land.  Make yourself known in such a powerful way that many people open their hearts and minds to the truth of your word.  We love to see individuals come to know you, but we long for a mighty movement of your Spirit to bring entire households, neighborhoods, and communities to yourself.  Overcome the skepticism of doubters - convict them of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment.  Empower your people to speak boldly, wisely, and sensitively of your love and grace as you provide opportunities.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on the disabled in our community.  Provide for their needs - material, financial, emotional, and spiritual.  Grant them loving family and friends to walk alongside them in their journey.  Turn their hearts to you and give them a hope that is beyond medicine or therapy but that lasts for eternity.  At the same time, please provide for their needs toward healing, whatever those may be.  Grant fulfilling lives even in the face of challenges and obstacles.

Break down obstacles to the gospel throughout Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.  Empower your church in each one of these countries to overcome darkness with the light of your word.  I pray especially for Russia, that your light may shine brightly there, changing the society and especially the government for the sake of your glory.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Zechariah 8:20-22; Matthew 21:10; Isaiah 63:9

Day 32 - Saturday, March 17

Lord God, you are worthy of all worship - worthy to be worshiped by people from every nation, tribe, and language.  May the day soon come when that's a reality!  Cause men, women, and children from every people group on earth to seek you sincerely, and reveal yourself to them as they seek.  Raise up persons of peace in every village and tribe and among every people group, so that the Gospel may gain a foothold in each group.  Call entire households to yourself.

Father, please have mercy on the military and on their families.  Keep safe those who are serving abroad in dangerous places.  Grant peace to their families and provide for their needs.  Above all, turn their hearts to you, to rely on you in faith and to trust in your grace and mercy.  Empower chaplains and other spiritual leaders to speak the truth of your word in love, so as to draw men and women in all branches of service to yourself.

May you be named and honored in every corner of Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, and Vatican City.  In places that have fallen to a "post-Christian" culture, Lord, bring revival and a return to You and to the truth of your word.  In places where your word is suppressed and your followers persecuted, change the hearts of those who have set themselves against you and break down the gates of hell before your church.  Cleanse and purify your church in these countries.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Psalm 22:27-28; John 12:20-21; Matthew 8:5-10

Day 33 - Sunday, Mar. 18

Lord Jesus, you are the Prince of Peace.  Please bring peace in our city and in cities across the country - peace between races and ethnic groups; peace between liberals and conservatives; peace between social groups and economic classes.  The day will come - and may it be soon, Lord! - when you will bring peace to all the earth at your return.  But until then, please reconcile individuals to yourself that they also may be reconciled to each other.  May you be seen as the ultimate hope for ongoing peace between peoples and cultures.

Lord God, please bring peace to so many places in the world where hatred and violence are rife - places like Syria, northern Nigeria, Iran, Sudan, and Eritrea.  Places like India where persecution is on the rise and like North Korea where persecution has long been the norm.  Raise up your church as reconcilers of people - you have reconciled us to yourself and given us the ministry of reconciliation.  Cause us to take that seriously, Father.

Father, may your word soon spread throughout all the peoples of Algeria, Bahrain, and Cyprus.  Break down every barrier to the Gospel in these countries.  Raise up persons of peace in each people group and bring them into contact with the Gospel.  Draw their hearts to you and through them, draw others.  May entire households in these countries be won for Christ and may your church steadfastly reflect your love and grace in these places.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Micah 4:3; Matthew 12:21; Psalm 22:27

Day 34 - Monday, Mar. 19

Father, please use all the conflict and uncertainty in the world and in our country to open doors for the Gospel.  Place in the hearts of people a strong desire for the peace and the certainty that only You can provide.  Cause people to become dissatisfied with things that don't last, and to seek the Truth.  And as they do that, Lord, open doors for believers to share the Gospel with them and for the church to serve them.

Empower your people to follow you without fear - whether that's fear of rejection in this country or fear of persecution around the world.  May your praise be on the lips of all your people, and would you please use that praise to touch the hearts of those who are far from you.

Please look with your favor on the mothers in our city and communities.  Strengthen them for the crucial work you have given them.  Give them a sense of your presence and your favor in their work, and protect them from the doubts that the evil one would sow through the opinions of the world of the value of motherhood.  Turn the hearts of husbands to their wives, to give their lives for their wives and serve them as you raise families to honor you.

Open doors for the spread of the Gospel throughout Egypt, Iran, and Iraq.  Thank you especially for the spiritual openness throughout Iran, especially among the youth.  You have shown them, Lord, the futility of Islam - now please show them the truth.  Bless the work of ministries like Iran Alive and others who are reaching out with the Gospel in Iran.  Bring about a great revival in this country that will turn the direction of the nation around.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

Father, please make of your church a beacon of hope, light, and grace in our city.  Forgive us our own lack of forgiveness and bring us to repentance for failing to forgive our neighbors the way you forgive us.  Make of us a people who return good for evil, blessing for curse, prayer for persecution.  It is not natural for us to love our enemies, Lord - those who have set their hearts and lives against you and against your people.  We rely solely on your supernatural power for that.

Please strengthen persecuted believers around the world to respond with grace to those who persecute them.  To forgive as Stephen forgave; to worship as Paul and Silas worshiped; to stand strong with the word of truth as Peter and John did.  Raise your hand on behalf of your persecuted church so that those outside your grace may see your power and believe.

Lord we seek your grace on behalf of the elderly in our communities.  Bless their later years with peace, with loving relationships, with purpose and meaning.  For those who know you, Lord, make these years the best years of their lives - and for those who don't, please don't give up on them but offer them yet again a chance to hear the Gospel and to believe in you.  Take care of the elderly in such a way that they will be brought to gratitude for your love and will abound in your grace.

Spread your word throughout the nations of Israel, Jordan, and Kuwait, Father.  Bring clarity to those who think they know you and yet are far from you.  Move in the hearts of believers in these countries to share the Gospel with those who do not know you.  Reap a rich harvest through the proclamation of your word.

In Jesus' name. Amen.
