A Community of Prayer Champions, Praying Churches, Prayed-for Communities

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."  -- 1 Timothy 2:1-4

For the past couple of years, I've been posting prayer requests from the Presidential Prayer Team, and I will continue that in this new discussion for 2018.

One of the most commonly quoted passages used to encourage us to pray for our leaders is 1 Timothy 2:1-2.  We understand that God calls us to pray for our leaders; elsewhere we're told that when kings rule in righteousness, the people are happy.

But there's more to it than that.  We need to pray for our leaders in such a way that their leadership results in open doors for the Gospel and for people to come to know Christ.  This is the goal of verse 4 - "all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth".  We are to pray with this end in mind.

So it's not just about praying that a bill will (or won't) pass.  It's about praying that the result of the bill will be to bring honor to God and open doors for the Gospel.  We often pray for the types of results that we can immediately see - that a candidate will or won't be elected, that a bill will pass or be repealed, etc.  But God calls us to pray with far more than that in mind.  Humility requires us to admit that we don't know what God knows about what might be best for our country, best for the people, etc.

So I encourage you, as you pray for our leaders, to pray with God's purposes in mind - not conservative purposes or liberal purposes but the purposes of the one to whom all history points.

President Trump will be in Pittsburgh today visiting H&K Equipment Inc. The president is expected to speak about the new tax bill and how it affects local businesses and manufacturers. H&K Equipment Inc. has been in business for 35 years and makes industrial equipment like fork lifts and construction trucks. The president has always been quick to praise American manufactures and small businesses, so H&K may represent more to the president than just one company. H&K’s president and CEO George Koch said, “As I understand it, President Trump has always liked small business. He thinks that’s part of the engine that runs the country, which I think it is also. We're one of those companies.”

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For safety for the president as he travels.
  • For wisdom and insight as he speaks.
  • For the event to be effective and successful and that his words will be impactful.

Pray with us today as January 20th marks the one year anniversary of President Trump’s inauguration. While he and the first family had originally planned to travel to Palm Springs on Friday in order to celebrate the occasion, the trip was postponed so that the president could work with Congress to prevent a government shutdown. At the time of writing, the president’s Saturday schedule is still to be determined. In reference to the Continuing Resolution enabling the government to avoid a shutdown, the White House said in a statement, “The President will not be going to Florida until the CR passes.” He was also scheduled to attend a gala celebrating the anniversary today.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For the president and congress as they work to pass the stop gap measure to prevent a shutdown of the government.
  • For encouragement for the president as he celebrates the completion of his first year in office and reviews what he has done.
  • For wisdom as he evaluates the work ahead in the second year and that he would look to accomplish the will of God through his many decisions

Monday, January 22, 2018

Due to the shutdown, the president’s schedule has been changing rapidly. He and the first family stayed in Washington D.C. over the weekend in order to meet with other officials. All of the president’s official weekend plans were postponed or cancelled in favor of working on a resolution to the shutdown as well as managing which essential services would stay open.  The White House said that the president spent Saturday and Sunday speaking with leading senators and representatives to bring an end to the shutdown, but at the time of publishing, progress has been slow. Lawmakers wanted to reach a deal before Monday, but, due to disagreements, many have indicated that they expect the shutdown to continue. The Senate is working hard to hammer out a resolution as soon as possible.

The president is expected to continue meeting with legislators today. Republicans and Democrats will need to compromise in order to resolve the issue.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For willingness to compromise for all members of the government.
  • For a quick and effective resolution to the shutdown.
  • For collaboration and understanding for our leaders as they come to a solution
  • For the many required to work without pay, including military, border security officers, and those fighting fires out west.

The President's Schedule

  • 11:00AM EST
The President receives his daily intelligence briefing
  • 1:30PM EST
Press Briefing with Press Secretary Sarah Sanders

Tuesday, January 23, 2018

Last night, President Trump signed the stop gap bill ending the government shutdown and funding it through February 8th. Today, all government offices will reopen. The president and congress will now need to negotiate on immigration, border security, military funding, and a host of other budget concerns in order to set the budget for the remainder of the year.

The president is also scheduled to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week. Due to the shutdown, many travel plans were delayed. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was scheduled to leave Monday, but will now be traveling today. The president will travel to Davos later this week.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For wisdom for the president this week as he works with congressional leaders
  • For discernment as he meets with world leaders in Switzerland.
  • For the president as he works with staff and officials on reopening all government offices.
  • For congress as they continue the negotiations with the lessened pressure from the shutdown.

NAFTA’s Fate Uncertain

President Trump Has Threatened Abandonment

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) hangs in the balance this week as negotiators from the United States, Canada and Mexico try to settle major differences over revamping a pact that President Donald Trump has threatened to abandon.

Senior officials from the three nations will meet in Montreal for a week starting Tuesday in the sixth and penultimate round of talks to modernize the 1994 agreement. The talks are expected to wrap up by the end of March to avoid clashing with Mexico’s general elections in July.

President Trump, who entered office last year pledging to undo what he described as disastrous trade deals, has portrayed NAFTA as grossly unfair to the United States and its workers. The president, who blames NAFTA for killing off hundreds of thousands of U.S. manufacturing jobs and says it has led to a large trade deficit with Mexico, tweeted last week that “NAFTA is a bad joke.”

As the Lord Leads, please pray:
  • For wisdom for the representatives of President Trump and the U.S. government at the NAFTA talks.

  • About disparities in trade agreements that often seem to favor countries other than the United States.

  • About equity between trading nations.

Sunday, January 28, 2018

President Trump and the first family stayed in Washington D.C. over the weekend. Following the difficult week working with Congress to end the shutdown and then the trip to Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum, the president will likely be looking to rest. Next week he and Congress will continue to tackle immigration and the upcoming budget.

On Monday he is expected to announce a plan to provide a path to citizenship for millions of young immigrants who were brought to the nation illegally. His plan is expected to include an increase in the number of those who would be protected from deportation, an increase in border security, and an end to chain migrations and the lottery program.

On Tuesday, the president will be giving the State of the Union address to Congress at 9 PM in the House chamber. He will be reviewing the past year as well as casting vision for the upcoming 12 months.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For President Trump that he would be able to rest today and prepare for the upcoming week.
  • For wisdom and strong leadership for the president as he works to help reform the existing immigration policies along with Congress.
  • For the president and staff as they prepare for the State of the Union Address.
  • For the will of God to be accomplished in his decisions and actions this week.

President, UN Security Council Meet Monday

To Rally International Coalition Against Iran

President Trump will meet with United Nations Security Council diplomats on Monday as part of an effort to rally an international coalition against Iran.

The meeting, which will be the president’s second working lunch with the Security Council, comes in the middle of a two-tack effort in Congress and with European allies to address flaws that the Trump Administration perceives in the nuclear deal negotiated by President Barack Obama’s team.

A rollback of Iran’s ballistic missile program is a key priority for the Trump Administration, as the president has threatened to scrap the nuclear deal if lawmakers and allies fail to develop a plan for curbing the regime’s behavior.

“In the absence of such an agreement, the United States will not again waive sanctions in order to stay the Iran nuclear deal,” President Trump said in a statement earlier this month. “And if at any time, I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately.”

As the Lord Leads, please pray:
  • For President Trump’s efforts to rally an international coalition to deal with Iran.

  • About Iran’s ballistic missile program.

  • About the continuation of the Iran nuclear deal.

President Trump is set to deliver his first State of the Union address to Congress and to the nation this evening. This will be the president’s first and will be a platform for him to review the past year as well as lay the groundwork for the upcoming year. The background for the address is laid out in the U.S. constitution, Article II, Section 3, Clause I, which reads that the president “shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."

White House aides have indicated that the president’s address will focus heavily on the difficult work ahead and the need for unity and collaboration in the government to accomplish such tasks. Without the ability to put aside political differences for the best interest of the nation, the government could continue to face shutdowns and will be unable to make the significant breakthroughs on the countless issues that need to be addressed in the coming year.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For wisdom and clarity as the president speaks to both houses of Congress
  • For unity in all three branches of government this year.
  • For God’s will to be accomplished through the president’s words during the address and in the government’s actions following.

The President's Schedule

  • 9:10PM EST

Senator Duckworth Makes History

Senator Tammy Duckworth will be the first senator to give birth in office

Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois announced a few days ago that she is having a baby in April. Sen. Duckworth will be the first senator to give birth while in office. The war hero, now senator, was also the first disabled woman elected to Congress. While serving in Iraq, Sen. Duckworth sustained major injuries, which required double amputation, while co-piloting a helicopter which exploded.

Senator Duckworth reports that she will not be retiring from the Senate, actually the contrary: “I want to stay even longer. I want to be there to really be able to make the change, so that my daughters will grow up not knowing any boundaries, so that my daughters will grow up not having to make that choice between their profession and their fertility.” Sen. Duckworth’s continued service is a vital benefit to the Senate. In addition to her attention to military and immigration issues, Sen. Duckworth serves on Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Environment & Public Works Committee, Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee, and Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

For the continued safety and health of Sen. Duckworth and her daughter

For the continued safety and health of the rest of Sen. Duckworth’s husband and other daughter

For Sen. Duckworth to continue to have success in her work at the Senate and that her relationships would be fruitful

For Sen. Duckworth to experience unity in the Senate and accomplish the Father’s Will
