Prayer Shield, by Peter Wagner

Regal, 1992; Chosen Books, 1994

The theme of the book is the importance of Christian leaders  having a committed group of people interceding for them.  The author's premise is that all Christian leaders undergo some degree of spiritual warfare.  Fighting those spiritual battles requires prayer, but Christian leaders in the midst of the battle aren't always in the best position to be the prayer warriors.

Wagner draws heavily on the Biblical example of Joshua and the battle with the Amalekites at Rephidim (Exodus 17).  Joshua led the troops in battle while Moses interceded with God.  The narrative notes that when Moses was interceding, Joshua was winning; but when Moses tired and "lowered his hands", Joshua was losing.

One interesting recurring theme in the book is that of "levels" of intercessor.  Wagner defines three levels of personal intercessor as follows:

  • I-3 intercessors, who pray from a distance.  The leader may or may not be aware of who the I-3 intercessors are.  Generally, only well-known leaders with widespread ministries would have a significant number of I-3 intercessors (the author mentions Billy Graham as an example).
  • I-2 intercessors, who know the leader personally but not intimately.  Examples include people in a pastor's congregation.  I-2s receive somewhat regular communications (such as a prayer letter) from the leader and might interact personally, but  are not in a close circle of friends.
  • I-1 intercessors, who have close personal relationships with the leader and have regular two-way communication.  Wagner suggests that most leaders should have one or two I-1 intercessors.

Any Christian leader could benefit from this book and from the emphasis that Wagner puts on personal intercession. Besides the charismatic bent of the book, readers should be aware that it's over 20 years old.  Much of the teaching is  timeless, but some of the logistics  are much different today than they were when the book was written.

If you're a leader:

  • Do you have anyone praying for you on a regular, committed basis?
  • If not, why not?
  • If so, how are you keeping them informed and communicating how much you value them?

Free Ebook:

"Unreached Peoples, Least Reached Places:An Untold Story of Lostness in America"

written by J.D. Payne

Released March 3rd, 2014

I am delighted to share that Unreached Peoples, Least Reached Places: An Untold Story of Lostness in America is now available to download as a pdf. It’s brief, about fifty pages. That is intentional. You can read it quickly.

The pastors with The Church at Brook Hills are always asking how we can best equip our faith family for the work of the ministry (Eph 4:11-12). Part of shepherding others to reach the nations requires painting a picture of the realities of lostness. Therefore, I wrote this short ebook for our people.

Unreached Peoples, Least Reached Places is written to cast a vision of reality in the United States, and to offer some practical steps to move us along in disciple making and church multiplication. We know much about lostness in other parts of the world; we know little about it in our backyard.

One of the convictions that we hold as a faith family is to give away many of our resources for Kingdom advancement. With this in mind, I am releasing this book to you. I pray that it will be a blessing to you and your ministry.

Download your copy.

If you do, tell others to get a copy. Spread the word, far and wide.

J.D. Payne

Take it. Give it away. Use it for leading your church to the nations in this nation and beyond. If you do, tell others to get a copy. Spread the word, far and wide.

Phil I would be interested in joining your reading group for the book about prayer.  My address is Bryan Carter 118 Eastern Way Rutherford, NJ 07070.  One book that I have sitting on my night table is titled, A Praying Life by Paul E. Miller.  I can't recommend it yet because I haven't finished reading it but I thought it might be something to add it to the reading list.
