Why Aren't My Prayers Answered? (John Piper)

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 10:12 AM PDT

Back in 1996 John Piper preached a message titled, Praying From The Fullness of The Word, in which he addresses the questions, "Why aren't my prayers being answered?" He says in part,

It says we may not be praying according to God's will; 1 John 5:14, "If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us."

Or it could be we have cherished sin that we will not let go from our lives; Psalm 66:18, "If I regard wickedness in my heart, the Lord will not hear."

It could be that we have man-centered and not God-centered motives; James 4:3, "You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures."

Or it may be that we do not believe that God will do it; Mark 11:24, "All things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they shall be granted you."

Or it could be that God wants you to persevere, and is testing your obedience to his command in Luke 18:1, "At all times [you] ought to pray and not to lose heart."

Or it might be that God is, in fact, doing far more every time you pray than you can imagine and is daily putting in place a part of the mosaic that will in good time be the full answer to your prayer (as in Daniel 10:2,12).

It's a great word for all to hear. You can listen to the whole thing at Desiring God.

Maybe a prayer can be answered in more than one way ...

"The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective" NIV

Why take time to pray each day? --- because:

1. Reminds me of God's Goodness.

2. Builds my inner peace and stability.

3. Shows thankfulness and appreciation to God.

4. Establishes a high moral level with honest growth.

5. Waters the seeds of spiritual and moral soundness.

6. Enriches my life with a constructive practical direction.

7. Strengthens my belief in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
8. Reinforces the goodness of Jesus while suppressing evil.

9. Establishes love, patience, courage, hope and confidence.

10. Purifies my heart --- develops my mind --- comforts my soul.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus"  Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV

Prayer: Father thank you that you hear each and every word said in prayer --- to you be all glory honor and praise. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!

I’M GLAD YOU ASKED…
Q. Will God answer everybody’s prayers?

A. There is, in fact, one prayer that God promises to
answer, no matter who prays it. That’s the prayer
prayed by someone who wants to come to know God
personally. Scripture teaches us … “No one can please God without faith,
for whoever comes to God must have faith that God exists and rewards
those who truly want to find him.” (Hebrews 11:6) We read about such a
person in The Acts. Cornelius was a Gentile who wanted to have a personal
relationship with God. We’re told that he was constantly praying about
that. (The Acts 10:2) And God answered his prayer. Actually, God answered
two prayers, because Peter had been in prayer about the same time. (The
Acts 10:9) And God revealed to him that the Gospel message was for
Gentiles as well Jews. Having heard that, Peter then had the opportunity
to present the Good News to Cornelius. God works through The Holy
Spirit to prepare a person’s heart to receive the truth about Jesus. (1
Corinthians 12:3) That means that God answers the prayers of anyone who
wants to know Him personally.

See you in Church

Blessings,
