A Community of Prayer Champions, Praying Churches, Prayed-for Communities

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."  -- 1 Timothy 2:1-4

For the past couple of years, I've been posting prayer requests from the Presidential Prayer Team, and I will continue that in this new discussion for 2018.

One of the most commonly quoted passages used to encourage us to pray for our leaders is 1 Timothy 2:1-2.  We understand that God calls us to pray for our leaders; elsewhere we're told that when kings rule in righteousness, the people are happy.

But there's more to it than that.  We need to pray for our leaders in such a way that their leadership results in open doors for the Gospel and for people to come to know Christ.  This is the goal of verse 4 - "all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth".  We are to pray with this end in mind.

So it's not just about praying that a bill will (or won't) pass.  It's about praying that the result of the bill will be to bring honor to God and open doors for the Gospel.  We often pray for the types of results that we can immediately see - that a candidate will or won't be elected, that a bill will pass or be repealed, etc.  But God calls us to pray with far more than that in mind.  Humility requires us to admit that we don't know what God knows about what might be best for our country, best for the people, etc.

So I encourage you, as you pray for our leaders, to pray with God's purposes in mind - not conservative purposes or liberal purposes but the purposes of the one to whom all history points.

President Trump will be spending his weekend in Mar-A-Lago with the first family. He will be looking to rest and re-energize in preparation for next week. He and Congress will continue to work on finalizing immigration and border security issues as part of the year’s budget. Congress will need to reach an agreement to avoid another shutdown when the stopgap bill expires on February 8th.

This weekend comes on the heels of the public release of a memo detailing the investigation into the Department of Justice and the FBI’s use of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act during the 2016 presidential campaigns. Pray today for our leaders as the implications of the memo’s release aren’t yet fully realized and many are still trying to piece together all of the details.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For the president to be able to rest this week end and return to Washington rejuvenated.
  • For unity for the president and Congress and they work to resolve the budget before the deadline next week.
  • For God to continue to reveal the truth and for transparency to grow in our government.
  • For the president and other leaders as they may have to make difficult decisions because of the release of the memo.

President Donald Trump spoke Friday with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea to wish

him and the Korean people a successful Winter Olympic Games, the White House said in a

readout of the president’s call to the South Korean president.

“The two leaders discussed the importance of improving the human rights situation in North Korea

and underscored their commitment to work together on this issue,” The Whites House said.

“President Trump also reiterated his commitment to addressing the trade imbalance between

the two countries.”

The president and first family have no public schedule today. They are expected to stay in Palm Beach at Mar-A-Lago until returning to the White House this evening. While there is no official schedule, like previous weekends in Florida, President and First Lady Trump are often busy with events. The president regularly attends fundraisers, and has many different types of meetings, including ones with political figures, over the weekends. With the upcoming budget vote in Congress, and the parts of it that involve immigration, the president will likely be planning meetings with congressional leaders this week. As the FISA memo release continues to make headlines, the president is expected to continue to field questions and help plan out the next step for the many government agencies involved.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For the president to be able to rest this week end and return to Washington rejuvenated.
  • For him during any and all of the many weekend functions and meetings that he attends
  • For discernment as the president works with congressional leaders on the budget.
  • For a willingness to compromise and work together in Congress.
  • For national leaders to seek wisdom from God in their upcoming decisions.

Supreme Court to Vote on Travel Ban

To hear arguments on travel ban in April

Last week the Supreme Court announced intent to hear arguments regarding President Trump’s travel ban proposal in April 2018. The travel ban initially went into effect in September pending appeal. The travel ban restricts travel with Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen. The ban has been partially blocked by lower courts.

The presidential administration and Supreme Court have been working together to determine when the issue would be heard and which version of the travel ban will be examined. The primary responsibility of the court will be to determine whether or not the travel ban violates immigration law and/or the Establishment Clause of the Constitution.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:
  • For the presidential administration as they prepare their arguments to present before the Supreme Court
  • For the opposing council as they prepare their arguments to present before the Supreme Court
  • For the Supreme Court as the justices make a decision based on the travel ban which is in the best interest of American and international citizens
  • For clarity and unity amongst the Supreme Court justices to make the best decision
  • For the will of God to be accomplished in the hearing and the vote

At the time of writing, the White House issued a statement advising federal agencies to prepare for a limited government shutdown as congress missed the midnight deadline to pass a budget resolution. The language used seems to indicate that the president believes that the shutdown will only last a few hours until Congress can finalize a vote. Many federal offices are still recommending that their employees arrive as scheduled in the morning since they expect the shutdown to be resolved soon.

If the Senate is able to reach of resolution, the president is expected to continue on the announced schedule and meet with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and then meet with EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt. If a resolution cannot be reached, the president's schedule is likely to change in order to enable him to meet with congressional leaders and administer the appropriate logistics of a full government shutdown.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For unity in our leaders that they will be able to put aside party differences to do what is in the best interest of the nation.
  • For a willingness to compromise for all members of the government.
  • For a quick and effective resolution to the shutdown.
  • For the many required to work without pay, including military, border security officers, and those fighting fires out west.

President Trump is expected to announce his much anticipated plan for boosting the United States infrastructure. Some expect that the proposal will aim to inject $200 billion of the federal budget into revamping U.S. roads, bridges, airports, and other infrastructure needs across the nation. In addition to federal funds, the president will likely aim to partner with state governments and the private sector to raise additional capital. The president gave some detail of this during his State of the Union address, “Every federal dollar should be leveraged by partnering with state and local governments and, where appropriate, tapping into private sector investment to permanently fix the infrastructure deficit.”

Along with adding federal money, many believe that the plan will also include measures to reduce bureaucracy and streamline the process, thus reducing the time required to gain approval on infrastructure improvement projects. Later in the week, the president is scheduled to follow up by hosting both Democratic and Republican leaders at the White House on Wednesday.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For wisdom for the president as he works with advisers and other leaders to best determine the steps in improving infrastructure.
  • For wisdom for the president, Congress, and state leaders as they determine how to pay for the infrastructure needs, all while balancing so many other financial needs around the nation.
  • For our leaders to pursue God in prayer before making any decisions.

This morning, the president is scheduled to meet with a group of bipartisan members of Congress to discuss the plans for bolstering the United States infrastructure as well as the budget required to achieve that plan. As a show of confidence yesterday, President Trump donated his fourth-quarter salary to help fund the infrastructure upgrades. In the afternoon, he is scheduled to sign two acts that were recently passed by Congress.

The first, the Department of Homeland Security Blue Campaign Authorization Act, gives the DHS a mandate and resources to further develop programs and training to combat human trafficking. The second bill, Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse Act, broadens the legal protection for victims who are minors and adds additional legal accountability to those who fail to report abuses.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For wisdom for the president and congressional leaders as they determine the next steps in addressing the infrastructure needs across the nation.
  • For the president as he signs these two bills into law.

At 11 AM this morning, President Trump will address the nation following the Florida high school shooting which took the lives of 17 people and wounded another 15.

Later today, President Trump will meet with U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley. Haley has been attending UN Security Council meetings and is expected to brief the president on a number of concerns. As part of the council, she has urged the international community to act on several issues. One of the major issues presented to the council was the human rights violations committed by the Burmese government (also called Myanmar) against the Rohingya people. According to Haley, these violations include forcible displacement of hundreds of thousands, suppression of information by silencing journalists, mass executions and the ethnic cleansing of an entire people group.

She continued, “I urge my colleagues to seize this opportunity to end our inaction and live up to our responsibilities as members of this Security Council. I call on all nations to join the United States in doing more than just demanding an end to the atrocities in Burma, but actually taking the steps we know are needed to put this crisis on the path toward solution.”

The U.S. has already imposed sanctions on several Burmese leaders in response.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For wisdom for the president as he makes decisions on American foreign policy.
  • For clarity as the president and advisors as they determine the best course of action on all international issues.

President Trump was originally scheduled to travel to Orlando today, but changed his plans due to the shooting in Parkland, Florida. His schedule is subject to change and he will begin this morning by receiving a full briefing on the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. In his address on Thursday, he said that it is “not enough to simply take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference — we must actually make that difference.”

The president added that he is planning a trip to Parkland in the near future to meet with legislators, local officials, and the community. He plans to oversee the coordination of the federal response, as well as work with state leaders on ways to make schools safer and mitigate future tragedy.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For President Trump as he meets with advisers and legislators to help determine the next steps.
  • For guidance for local law enforcement, first responders, and leaders, that they would know the right things to say and do to help those in need.
  • For the nation’s leaders as they look to make decisions to prevent such violence in the future.

treated and spoke with doctors and nurses about the situation.

The president and first lady are staying in Palm Beach at their Mar-a-Lago estate over the weekend. They will be there until Monday to celebrate President’s Day. While President Trump does use time over the weekends to rest, he also regularly uses weekends to meet with officials.

Today, the president is scheduled to meet with Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan to discuss legislative priorities for the House. The White House gave no further details regarding the meeting. Following the Senate’s open debates concerning immigration and the restructuring of DACA, it’s likely that both of these will be topics of discussion.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For the president to be able to rest this weekend and head into next week rejuvenated.
  • For wisdom and strong leadership for the president as he works to help reform the existing immigration policies along with Congress.
  • For unity in our leaders that they will be able to put aside party differences to do what is in the best interest of the nation.
