Beyond Prayer
The Romans built the most advanced system of roads the world had ever known, but that doesn’t mean travel was easy in New Testament times. Roman roads were built for military purposes, not comfort, and travelers either had to make their way by foot or, for the fortunate few, horse-drawn carriage. These ancient vehicles were rudimentary by modern standards, rough riding and certainly slow moving. A journey that today you might take in several hours by car would then have taken days or weeks. Then there were the roadside inns—notoriously dangerous and filthy, run by unscrupulous and shady characters.
Always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may now at least succeed in coming to you.
Romans 1:10
With that in mind, read today’s scripture again. The apostle Paul took at least three missionary journeys – embracing the hazards of travel to visit and help his Christian brothers and sisters. Praying for them, he decided, was just the start.

As you pray for your leaders, your loved ones and your friends in America today, make your prayer the beginning, not the end, of your involvement. What else are you willing to do, what sacrifices are you willing to make, and where are you fearlessly willing to go…to make a difference for Him?

The future of Christian free speech

by Jim Ray

You will be frightened by this story of police overreaction – or at least you should be – even though it doesn’t involve any baton beatings of innocent civilians, overzealous use of Taser guns or even the excessive application of pepper spray. This story of police overreaction involves only a question, not a weapon.

It wasn’t even a harsh question, really. The English police officer who posed the question asked it ever so nicely, with a touch of innocence. He was professional and restrained and unfailingly polite. And when the answer to the question wasn’t quite satisfactory, the policeman remained cordial. He didn’t even handcuff the preacher before hauling him off to jail.  More

Jay Carney

Jay Carney, White House Press Secretary

"People who suggest that there‘s anything unusual about the delaying of a deadline in the implementation of a complex and comprehensive law are deliberately sticking their heads in the sand or are just willfully ignorant about past precedent," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters at a daily briefing. "It‘s not serious." More

Gene Dodaro

Gene Dodaro, Comptroller General, Government Accountability Office

The federal government doesn’t maintain a single list of all of its programs, one reason the bureaucracy wasted more than $100 billion on bogus payments last year, the Comptroller General told Congress. More

For the first time ever, a fighter jet-sized drone piloted entirely by computer landed on a modern aircraft carrier. The successful touchdown paves the way for unmanned aircraft to operate alongside traditional airplanes, providing around-the-clock surveillance while also processing strike capability. More

Upheaval results in more persecution of Egyptian Christians

by Dave Ficere

“Liberty must at all hazards be supported. We have a right to it, derived from our Maker. But if we had not, our fathers have earned and bought it for us, at the expense of their ease, their estates, their pleasure, and their blood.” – John Adams

“We cannot have our freedom without blood. It is the price, what can we do?” – Egyptian Christian activist Nirvana Mamdouh

Earlier this month the world watched in stunned silence as the Egyptian military rose up to oust President Mohammed Morsi, replacing him with a civilian government. Buried beneath the headlines was the role Egypt’s minority Christian community played in the uprising.  More

Tracking American public opinion

by James N. Watkins

Pollster (pol-ster): (n) An annoying person who calls you right in the middle of dinner asking you for your opinion on politics, religion, product preferences, or if you’re concerned that the National Security Agency is monitoring the phone call.

The religious media has reported on several recent polls that attempt to discern America’s view of itself and its religious and political beliefs. Is the country growing stronger politically and morally or is it in that infamous “hand basket” going to you know where? More

Pray For President Obama & Administration

President Obama says he does not plan to compromise with Republicans when it comes to a path for citizenship in the immigration reform legislation, telling them “it doesn’t make sense to leave out path to citizenship.”

President Obama has rewarded at least 19 plum ambassadorships to major donors and political allies, a custom of former presidents, but outdoing his mediate predecessors.

Pray for President Obama to have a spirit of conciliation when working with members of both parties in Congress.
Pray For Congressional Leaders

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told a House committee that Congress is the largest obstacle to faster economic growth, and he warned they could make it worse later this year when considering fiscal policy.

Senators Rand Paul (Kentucky) and Ted Cruz (Texas) will support a proposal spearheaded by New York Senator Kristen Gillibrand to remove the military chain of command from sexual assault cases.

Pray that members of Congress might find bipartisan remedies to the nation’s budget and debt issues.
Pray For Judicial Needs

The D.C. Court of Appeals vacated the Environmental Protection Agency’s biogenic deferral rule that extended the compliance of biogenic and ethanol plants emissions levels for three years under the Clean Air Act.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit endorsed the legality of an Obama Administration rule requiring licensed gun dealers to notify the federal government of multiple sales of certain types of weapons in border states.

Pray about the impact of Court decisions upon businesses, such as ethanol users, that will affect the economy.
Pray for Current Events
WARS AND TERRORISM
The U.S. paid millions of dollars to an Iraqi contractor to build three schools in Afghanistan even though the contractor abandoned the project and left numerous safety hazards in incomplete sewer, water and electrical systems.

Pakistan plans to form a “working group” this month to hold peace talks with the Taliban and other Islamist militant groups, saying “irreconcilable” militants must be eliminated before coalition troops leave Afghanistan.

Pray about the fraudulent waste, fraud and corruption surrounding American resources spent in Afghanistan.
FOREIGN INTERESTS AND CONFLICTS
The conflict in Syria has caused the world’s worst refugee crisis in 20 years, with an average of 6,000 people fleeing every day in 2013, a new United Nations report says. The Rwandan genocide was the last time such numbers appeared.

Russia is undertaking its largest military “war games” in decades, since Soviet times, involving 160,000 troops and 5,000 tanks across Siberia plus its maneuvers by its Pacific Fleet and 130 combat aircraft.

Pray about the refugee crisis as Syrians flee their country entering Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq.
THE ECONOMY
Restaurants, bars, and other hospitality-industry employers have been remaking their workforces because of requirements of the Affordable Care Act, reducing most employees to a work week of 30 hours or fewer.

Retail sales rose less than expected in June, the latest sign of an apparent slow-down in economic growth that could argue against the Federal Reserve’s plan to start trimming its monetary stimulus later this year.

Pray about the atmosphere of fear that exists in the American economy keeping it stagnant.
ISRAEL AND THE MIDDLE EAST
Palestinian President Abbas met with Secretary of State Kerry Wednesday as Israel approved new homes in a West Bank settlement, potentially hampering U.S. efforts to persuade Abbas to rejoin peace talks.

A European Union directive barring its 28 members from cooperating with Israeli entities in the West Bank and Jerusalem garnered dramatic responses from across the Israeli political spectrum, saying it undercuts peace processes.

Pray about the impact that ongoing settlement development by Israel has upon peace negotiations.
HEALTH CARE
The FDA approved a new drug for patients with a genetic variant of advanced lung cancer along with a diagnostic test to detect the gene mutations. Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer among men and women in the U.S.

The FDA has announced new draft guidelines that call for no more than 10 parts per billion of inorganic arsenic in apple juice – roughly the same level allowed in tap water – and a concern of many parents of small children.

Pray for the employees of the Food and Drug Administration as they look to the health and safety of Americans.

Five Thousandth Point of Light Honored
The Bright Spot

The power of one individual to spark change and improve the world – that’s what the Daily Point of Light Award celebrates. And this week, Point of Light number 5,000 was honored at a celebration dinner with Presidents George H. W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Whether it is a teenager battling culture bullies or a plumber creating a school’s volunteer network, a mom leading a homegrown disaster relief drive, or an athlete wielding his celebrity for good instead of goods – a Daily Point of Light embraces the challenge of tackling community needs through volunteer service.  More
Presidential Quote of the Week
Warren G. Harding (1865-1923)

Warren G. Harding (1865-1923), 29th President of the United States

One cannot stand in this presence and be unmindful of the tremendous responsibility. The world upheaval has added heavily to our tasks. But with the realization comes the surge of high resolve, and there is reassurance in belief in the God-given destiny of our Republic.
