A Community of Prayer Champions, Praying Churches, Prayed-for Communities

Love is frequently the topic of conversation during this week in February. Whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day or not, there is no mistaking that a day focused on love is coming. From jewelry commercials to candy in heart-shaped boxes, the thought and idea of love permeates our culture during the first part of February.

But what if we focused on love all year long? What if we took the principles of love and put them into practice during the month of June? Or September? Every day of the year? I don’t mean romantic love. I mean the kind of love that causes us to truly appreciate someone else. To be kind, to sacrifice self, give to others, and desire good things for someone else. Not just in our families, but in our workplaces, schools, churches, and communities.

That is exactly what this year’s theme of the National Day of Prayer is calling us to do. LOVE ONE ANOTHER is not just a theme for a day of prayer. It is a calling to each of us to put into practice principles of love every day. Our families need us to LOVE ONE ANOTHER. Our workplaces need us to LOVE ONE ANOTHER. America needs us to LOVE ONE ANOTHER. The world needs us to LOVE ONE ANOTHER. It is a high calling, and one that has the potential to change not only our own personal circles, but America and the world.

Where will you pray with us on Thursday, May 2, 2019? Will you join a community gathering or host a gathering in your workplace? Will you attend or help host a gathering in your church? Join with others to pray for America and ask God for a LOVE ONE ANOTHER movement in our families, workplaces, cities, towns, states, and nation. Cry out to God with us on this day. Share with others using the image below and invite others to join you at a prayer gathering on Thursday, May 2.

One Voice - United In Prayer

Lisa Crump

There seems to be escalating chaos and crisis day by day. I know you must see it too. So, what can we do about it? Well, one thing is for sure. We must increase our seeking the LORD for help to stop the shootings, heal the sick, bestow wisdom in our government, and provide finances and counsel for our families. Wouldn’t it be more powerful to come to Him together - be a united voice to His throne?

Did you know there is a national network of volunteers who coordinate prayer events on the National Day of Prayer, the First Thursday every May? Every state has a leader who helps these volunteers by praying with them, giving advice and ideas so that more prayer is mobilized in cities, counties and throughout our nation. Some prayer walk an area, some prayer drive with others, while others have a prayer breakfast ornoon prayer time at city hall or at school flagpoles. The LORD is creative and certainly our advocate for prayer, so the ways and places to pray abound.

One Mind

Kathy Branzell

So that with one mind and voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.Romans 15:6

What is on your mind right now? Are you thinking about work, marriage, your children, a relationship, health, an upcoming event, money, politics, a decision you need to make, a loved-one who is far away or even serving in the military? Maybe your mind is not filled with deep thoughts at this moment, only a few distractions or daily stuff like, “What am I going to fix for dinner?” I have learned that when life seems shattered or my thoughts are scattered, my greatest strength, shield, and solution is to unite with God through prayer. I am going to ask you to pinpoint whatever it is that is on your mind and pray about it right now. Just pause for a moment and whether it is a praise, a word of thanks, a need, a decision, or even a deep situation that needs a miracle; lift it up to God right now.

Important Things Should Be Written Down

Rosalinda Baron

It's obvious through the Ten Commandments and the Bible that the Lord places a great emphasis on putting important things in writing. We put important things in writing too, such as marriage licenses and business contracts. But, when it comes to writing our Last Will and Testament, we tend to put it off year after year.

The truth is that having a Christian Will that legally provides for your loved ones is an important act of stewardship that believers often overlook. Have you stopped to consider that your Will is the legal document that transfers stewardship of everything the Lord has entrusted to you? This is why you should not only stop putting it off, but also, bathe the process in prayer and consider biblical principles when designing the right plan for your Will.

One Voice: A Concert of Prayer

By Kathy Branzell

Shirley Dobson

Psalm 34:3 O magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together. NASB

One of the many things I love about prayer is that it has a special way of uniting the followers of Christ. Prayer draws us together even when our traditions, denominations, preferences, or personalities might not have much in common. Prayer is a common thread that the Spirit sews throughout the body of Christ to repair the torn and tattered places that cause separation among us. One of my most favorite type of prayer gatherings are “Concerts of Prayer.” Concerts of Prayer, (COP) can follow many patterns and paths, there is not one particular script to follow, but it facilitates a connected gathering to magnify the Lord together.

Are You One?

Valentine’s Day has come and gone and I am sure you have noticed that it is set in place by our present culture to be all about ‘love’.  Certainly, we pray for marriages and our other human relationships to be well cared for.  Yet, there is a greater love story that transcends faces, places and wallets.  Where can we go to learn more?

Have you ever felt there was a Bible scripture that you just didn’t understand or left you in a place of confusion?  Maybe it even seemed to contradict other verses or concepts clearly stated in other passages.

Announcing Our New
Online
 Stewardship Ministry

bus

We're excited to let you know about our new free online stewardship ministry that will help you make informed decisions when giving toNational Day of Prayer Task Force.

You see, when Christians give to their church and other ministries they care about, most simply write a check, but this is not always the best plan of stewardship. As stewards in God's kingdom, Christians should take advantage of tax incentives available to them in order to harness as much as possible for their family and Lord's work. Through a series of video clips, this ministry will provide you with information about other ways to give that could be more advantageous than giving cash. For example, it might make more sense to give appreciated stock because there is a double tax benefit. You would not only receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the stock, but you would also avoid the capital gains tax.  Likewise, you can make gifts of things like real estate, life insurance, or bequests from your will, trust, or retirement accounts. If you are a business owner, you can give creatively from your business too! Also included is a Will and Trust Planning Ministry that will fully prepare you from a Christian perspective to visit with your attorney to have your Will or Trust drafted. Through short videos, you'll learn how to biblically plan for children, grandchildren, parents, spouses and much more.

To learn more about this exciting new stewardship ministry, please visit our website at: www.nationaldayofprayer.org/donate and click on the introduction video.

Fellowship with God

Shirley Dobson

Warm greetings from the National Day of Prayer Task Force (NDP)! As we draw closer to this year’s National Day of Prayer on May 1, I want to take this opportunity to share the importance of your ongoing partnership in our efforts. Since 1952, when Congress established an annual day of prayer, millions of Americans have gathered each year in churches, synagogues, schools, parks, and other venues to intercede for our nation. Today we face extremely difficult times and daunting challenges, from economic turmoil to the threat of terrorism to moral confusion and decline. It behooves us, then, to once again honor the precedent established by Presidents and leaders throughout our history – that of proclaiming reliance on an Almighty God and calling citizens to come before Him on behalf of our nation.

All things are in our Heavenly Father’s hands, and we can come boldly before Him knowing that He has promised to hear the petitions of His children. In that spirit, our NDP Task Force has chosen One Voice, United in Prayer as our theme for 2014, based on Romans 15:6, “So that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” How encouraging to be reminded that all of us who have trusted Jesus Christ as our Savior have been given free and unhindered access to His presence. Not only are we invited to approach the very throne of God, but we have done nothing to deserve this extraordinary privilege. Our ability to interact personally with the Father is made possible only by virtue of His Son’s sacrifice on the cross...

One Voice, United in Prayer

In 1620, William Bradford and the brave men and women of faith aboard the Mayflower declared America to be “for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith.” Later it was President George Washington who said that the twin pillars essential for supporting a successful society are morality and religion. John Adams, our second president specified that the “The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were … the general principles of Christianity.”

So, where are we today? Are we still a Christian nation? For those of us who align with this faith, the easy answer is yes—but the reality is more difficult to process. According to recent surveys, including one from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, the fastest growing “religious” group in America is made up of people with no religion at all. This group has grown by 25 percent in the past five years, and for the first time Evangelicals and Protestants now make up only 48 percent of the population. There was a significant decline in the group who identified themselves as Christian—by as much as 14 percent since 2005...

National Day of Prayer: May 1, 2014
March 2014

United in Prayer

Dion Elmore

The other day, a friend of mine sent me an email containing an observation that he had made. He was questioning why so many in the church seem to use two particular verses in Matthew, chapter 18, as texts to illustrate prayer. His perspective was that they were not about prayer in specific at all, but in the context, of church discipline. Most will be familiar with verses 18 and 19, "I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.”

While he was correct, that Jesus did give these two examples in the context of discipline, the principle and examples were really instruction by Jesus on the power of authority and agreement. Jesus’ authority, imparted by Him to us, was for the purpose of establishing His will, in any and all situations. For the purpose of this article, I want to focus specifically on verse 19, ‘if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for’. All it takes is two, agreeing together, on His word and His will. Our unity, one mindedness, and agreement as believers about His will are essential if we hope to represent His authority in asking. And this is where unity in prayer and petition, ‘asking’ if you will, come in. The definition of the Greek word translated ‘ask’, is to ask, beg, call for, crave, desire, request, or require. Emphatic, authoritative ‘asking’, realizing who we are in Him, our authority as believers, and remembering Who He is! God Almighty! The One Who is able to do exceeding, abundantly, above anything that we can even ask or think!

Unity: Growth, Gain & Glory

Kathy Branzell“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, Coming down upon the beard, Even Aaron's beard, Coming down upon the edge of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon Coming down upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing - life forever.” Psalm 133:1-3 (NAS)

What images pop into your head when you hear the word, “unity?” I picture peace, joy, love, patience and even discipleship or mentoring, kindness, … oh, wait! I picture the fruit of the Spirit when I think of unity! Psalm 133 describes how “good and pleasant” unity is in the eyes of God; it is a fresh anointing of God that flows and not only covers us from head to toe, but covers the body of Christ from head to toe. It is also a generous blessing that brings life giving, life-extending power to our days.

National Day of Prayer: May 1, 2014
April 2014

Dear Friends,

Shirley DobsonGreetings from Colorado Springs!
As Chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, I’d like to take this opportunity to speak to you about a matter that is crucial to the future of our nation – prayer!  In 2 Chronicles 7:14, the Lord proclaims “If my people, who call on My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, I will forgive their sins, and I will heal their land.” This verse makes it clear that God cares about and responds to the attitudes and actions of His people. The continuing moral decline in our nation and the battle over the definition of traditional marriage is a troubling indicator that the most fundamental pillars of our society are hanging in the balance. This serves as an urgent wake-up call that we cannot become complacent in striving to uphold the beliefs that provided the very framework upon which our beloved country was established.

History has recorded a wealth of evidence that our founding fathers intended the United States to be a haven for those dedicated to biblical truth.  These men had the foresight not only to install constitutional safeguards to our freedoms, but also to warn of what would occur in the absence of these ideals.  Daniel Webster said it this way: “To preserve the government we must also preserve morals.  Morality rests on religion; if you destroy the foundation, the superstructure must fall...

Does Prayer Really Work?

Dion ElmoreOn May 1, 2014, the National Day of Prayer (NDP) will take place and millions of Americans will unite at more than 42,000 locations from coast to coast to pray. Every year there is a theme that the Chairman of the NDP Task Force, Mrs. Shirley Dobson, wife of Family Talk founder, Dr. James Dobson, will select as a rally cry, and this year the theme is “One Voice, United in Prayer”, based on Romans 15:6.

So, this begs the question; does prayer really work? After all, why would millions of people stop what they are doing, gather together and then speak into the air or in the thought recesses of their minds with some expectation that things are really going to change? Is there truly someone listening that can do anything about the current state of affairs in our homes, work places, communities or even our nation? This is the 63rd annual National Day of Prayer so where is all the change these people have been crying out to God for? Before we can talk about whether or not prayer makes a difference in our nation, we have to first address prayer for what it is and if it is making a difference in our personal lives. So, let’s jump into one of the greatest theological questions of all time. It was the disciples who inquired first, so you are not alone...

A Word of Encouragement

busRecently, a little Word of Encouragement was written to the ministry, along with a generous gift from a donor, who is a successful business owner and just recently celebrated his 75th anniversary in business.  The main point of the note was that God’s supernatural power will be tested by men and women of faith to live out His principles to an unbelieving world, and the biggest tests will involve finances (Malachi 3:10).  The donor encouraged us to pray asking God to supply all the needs of the ministry and every special project He wants done, allowing God to work on the hearts of people to respond, so that He gets all the praise and glory.  This dear friend of our ministry then mentioned a quote from Hudson Taylor stating, “God’s work done in God’s way will not lack God’s support.”  The question is when we pray, do we trust God to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory? Phil 4:19

The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon began in 1990, the year proclaimed by a Joint Congressional Resolution and Presidential Proclamation by President George H.W. Bush as the International Year of Bible Reading. The event serves to honor the Bible, celebrate religious freedom and unite the diverse branches of Christianity around the Bible.

Readers who participate come from many backgrounds and locations all across America. Members of Congress and world-renowned Christian leaders and pastors stand alongside street people, families, military personnel, school children, nurses, teachers, and otherwise ordinary believers to raise up the Word of God.

Each year the Bible is read at the Capitol also by visitors from around the world in their native tongues. Bibles will be on hand in @ 100 languages. Every culture, age, denomination, race and political party is represented. Many branches of faith will represented as well, including Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Messianic and Jewish.

The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon is a part of a weeklong celebration of prayer and the Word, not only in the Nation's Capital, but across the nation. Bible reading marathons will be taking place in many state capitals and county seats in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer (Thursday, May 1).

Reading times can be reserved through Terry Shaffer Hall, 202-441-6455 ordcbiblemarathon@gmail.com

In case you missed it...

Anne Graham Lotz, 2014 Honorary Chairman and daughter of Rev. Billy Graham, delivered a powerful message on prayer and repentance at the National Observance of the 63rd annual National Day of Prayer. Her 29-minute appeal to God's people was one of the highlights of the solemn assembly in Washington D.C. and was viewed around the world in more than 200 countries. In case you missed hearing her message, then click this link to watch now, online at GOD TV:

Supreme Court Upholds Prayer

On May 5th, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the American tradition of public prayer does not violate the Constitution.

This ruling:

  • Preserves the public prayer tradition that began with our founding.
  • Protects the freedom of community volunteers to pray according to their faith in a public setting, without censorship.
  • Defends the prayer giver’s freedom of speech.

For many, praying is an instinctive, soul-deep reaction to times of great joy, deep distress, and crushing grief, and permeates all aspects of life.

Continental_Congress_prayerAmerica’s Founding Fathers wove religious protections into our laws and government and took time to pray together publicly as they set about writing our Constitution.  Even today, our own government leaders pray before launching a day’s legislative work, inaugurating a governor or president, or speaking to families reeling from natural disasters and
brutal terrorist attacks.

This decision from the Supreme Court affirms that Americans are free to pray.

But many elected officials still fear to protect this institution due to intimidation and misinformation. So, show your Support for Public Prayer.

According to a recent poll by NBC News, 77% of Americans still believe that prayer is an important part of Government meetings. So, Let your elected officials know that you believe in prayer!Make your voice heard by signing this prayer petition.

The Alliance Defending Freedom will send a letter to your elected officials informing them of the constitutionality of public prayer, and may include the collected names.

Illinois State Senator Sam McCann (R-Springfield)
declares his full allegiance to the Savior - Jesus Christ

The 63rd Annual National Day of Prayer State of Illinois Capitol City event was one power-packed time of worship and intercession! It was one seamless 90 minute where the Power and the Presence of Holy God was so heavy that all present and the thousands more who listened to the edited one hour version on radio - over the air and online(www.wluj.org)commented that this one was the best Prayer event and service they have been to. What made it so special, among other things, were the bold testimony of the few real born-again Christians in Illinois Politics Senator Sam McCann of Central Illinois and prayer leader after prayer leader who stayed on message and listened to God before speaking.

We Must Unite in Prayer

Calling all Prayer Warriors to Hollywood, CA.
The Summons – October 1-5, 2014

Truly we are at the precipice of a societal migration from our Judeo-Christian foundation. Generations are forgetting the God of our Fathers. Therefore, the National Day of Prayer Task Force has called a Solemn Assembly in Hollywood, California, for such a time as this. A unified gathering of prayer ministries from around the world is about to take place that may shape the course of history and you have been summoned. The urgency of the moment and the prompting of God has paved the way for October 1-5, 2014, to be a moment in time where God’s people are standing in the gap on behalf of all Americans as perhaps Moses did for Israel (Exodus 32, Psalm 106).

Based on Psalm 50:1-6, this special prayer gathering will focus on every sphere of influence within the arts, media and entertainment of America at the epicenter of production in Hollywood, California - featuring outdoor corporate worship at key locations including studios and even the Hollywood sign. Groups will meet with actors, producers, directors, and others, for the task of praying for Divine revelation and intervention from Almighty God. It is not an assignment for the faint of heart. You will need walking shoes and clothing suitable for being on location regardless of weather. Join with hundreds of like-minded believers in a time of prayer like never before. To learn more, visit www.HollywoodPrayer.org and register today.

After you register, you will receive monthly prayers for the Media, which will serve as a baseline for our time in Hollywood.

We must unite in prayer so make plans, now, to join with me, Mrs. Shirley Dobson, and a host of prayer leaders from the Hollywood Prayer Network and many others for this focused time of intercession.

- John Bornschein, Vice Chairman

Praying for the Media

The Media is unquestionably one of the most powerful and influential voices in our culture. Journalism used to be a simple matter of reporting the facts and, where there was controversy, presenting both sides of the story. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. For the top national networks to local newspapers, we are faced with the challenge of sorting through commentary and conjecture in order to get to the truth.

Meanwhile, throughout the entertainment industry, the heroes of pop culture model vices such as materialism, promiscuity, substance abuse, and violence. Professional athletes, once some of our nations most revered and reliable role models, now watch many of their fellow players regularly fall into public disgrace.

Those of us determined to be discerning are constantly faced with the task of wading through the media’s often biased and immoral offerings to find wholesome and acceptable alternatives for ourselves and our families. Specifically, we need to recognize and reject the errant messages of popular culture that run counter to the Judeo-Christian system of values.

We encourage you to make our nation’s journalists a subject of prayer. Ask the Lord to proved the television, radio, and print mediums with staff members and executives who are committed to accuracy and integrity. We must also remember to intercede on behalf of actors, musicians, and athletes our young people seek to emulate. Pray that more of Hollywood’s celebrities will be worthy of our respect and admiration. And as you watch your favorite sport, ask the Lord to strengthen and embolden any Christians on the team or coaching staff. Nothing is too difficult for God, and though the industry often seems unprincipled, we know the Lord is able to use the media to accomplish His purposes.
