I mainly answered off the top of my head because what you are doing interests me. But I don't know why I did not think to suggest you look at Meditations for The Missions Heart. http://ondemand.condeopress.com/missions/meditations-for-the-missions-heart.html
I talk about it in a video I did for the group, "Shaking The World With The Written Word."
The first question might be what is modern. I would consider Through Gates of Splendor to be a modern classic mission book. It is not primarily on prayer however.
John Franklin's book, 30 days to a more dynamic prayer life (Is that the title?) is certainly worth reading.
I also think T.W. Hunt's "The Disciple's Prayer Life: walking in fellowship with God" is thunderous. Is it modern enough?
I like your idea and your search. I am anxious to find out what you discover.
