Impacting Cities & Communities thru Prayer
A Community of Prayer Champions, Praying Churches, Prayed-for Communities
For years I have been trying to teach the congregation about listening prayer. The congregation knew that we could as Christians know the voice of the Lord, but nothing seemed to work as a way to equip & teach people how to listen for and to the Lord's voice in prayer. Sunday morning worship was never conducive to teaching how to listen. Having studies on the topic of prayer proved frustrating and discouraging with very few participating. Last spring the Lord revealed to me in great details a questionaire on prayer that I wrote and submitted to the congregation to complete. One result of the questionaire was that everyone stated they wanted to learn how to hear the voice of the Lord. That was truly amazing, there was a desire to learn. The question that I needed to deal with was, "how to teach them ?" I couldn't come up with a format, because other attempts didn't seem to work. Then one day one of the Elders said they learned so much about prayer by the one on one time we would spend talking about prayer. That conversation spark an idea - a prayer mentoring program. In January of 2011 we launched our first "One-2-One Prayer Mentoring Program". I am very pleased how well this initiative has been working. There are currently 15 participants involved in the program (more than those who would comer out to a prayer meeting). Each participant meets with the minister to learn how to hear the voice of the Lord. Each session is catered to the needs and schedule each participant. Each session is confidential. What astounds me is how diverse the group is in their experience of prayer and ther goals and expectations from prayer. Again, I am very pleased how this is working. Many are learning the disciplines of prayer and many are sharing ideas of how to make this learning style more pervasive and more personal. I truly believe that I have found the way to teach more efffectively about the realities of the living and speaking God.
