In most churches in the western world, only a small fraction of believers participate in expressions of corporate prayer. This is a sad statement, and it is the reason why the American church is virtually powerless.
One of the most significant reasons why many do not participate is that corporate prayer in most churches is not corporate prayer, but personal prayer done in a group. By that I mean, usually everyone brings their own prayer practices into the larger group. This can…

Psalm 22:9-11Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother's breasts. On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother's womb you have been my God. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help.
Lord, I am so far from that immediate response, "Not my will, but Yours be done." And when I do get there, it is the result of a battle within my spirit to yield… Continue

Psalm 22:6-8But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; "He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!"
Lord, I fear scorn and rejection. Give me the strength to stand as You stood, to trust in the Father to deliver as You trusted, to… Continue

Psalm 22:3-5Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
Give me a strong and vibrant faith, Lord, infuse me with Your Holy Spirit, let me be filled to overflowing and an example of the transforming power of Your love and… Continue

There is a difference in watching “for” and watching “with”. Most of the time we are watching “for” God to reply, respond, act, etc. In the midst of Gethsemane grief, Jesus asked His disciples to “watch with” Him (Matthew 26:40). Unable to do so, they opted instead for a few moments of sleep, watching and… Continue

Psalm 22:1-2To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? (2) O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.
Lord, I cannot comprehend the depth and agony of Your… Continue

Psalm 119:59When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies;
When I think on my ways -- I need to examine the direction in which I am going in the light of Your testimonies. Am I walking according to the Word of the Lord? Am I honoring You with all my heart, soul, mind and strength? Am I loving my neighbor? Your testimonies will tell me. Your Holy Spirit will convict me and lead me onto that Way… Continue

We mention praying for each other all the time and toss it around like most people toss out “hello” as a greeting. I’m certainly not opposed to this but have you ever had someone who was truly a prayer warrior tell you that they are praying for you? I’ve experienced it on a few occasions and can tell you it is both humbling and unbelievably encouraging!
So as I’ve spent the last few weeks reading, blogging, preaching and reflecting on the Holy Spirit and His role as our Guide on this… Continue

Psalm 21:8-12Your hand will find out all your enemies; your right hand will find out those who hate you. You will make them as a blazing oven when you appear. The LORD will swallow them up in his wrath, and fire will consume them. You will destroy their descendants from the earth, and their offspring from among the children of man. Though they plan evil against you, though they devise mischief, they will not succeed. For you will put them to flight; you… Continue

Psalm 21:3-7For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head. He asked life of you; you gave it to him, length of days forever and ever. His glory is great through your salvation; splendor and majesty you bestow on him. For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence. For the king trusts in the LORD, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.… Continue
