Our Lives in this world are all temporary. In 2 Corinthians 5 Paul pictures our bodies as tents. This is a great picture from Paul the tentmaker. He may have had bedouins in mind, moving every day with the sparse grass across the desert. He may have been thinking of sojourners traveling to a new city. What comes to my mind is a camping trip. A tent is not permanent. Look with me at these first five verses of 2 Corinthians 5.…

This is the second sermon I have written for you in which God spoke to me from a sermon I heard elsewhere. Rick Warren preached the other sermon I heard. It was titled, Learn How to Recognize God's voice, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-827QmRDjUA . I highly recommend that…

Life changes and is never stagnant, if you allow yourself to grow. Growing takes effort. Reading His Word and applying His principles to your life. They are good principles, adding value to life. This does not mean you’re going to hop on a fluffy soft cloud and float through life with no heartache or pain. It does mean that you have God to lean on. It means when you seek Him, He will answer. When you follow His principles the hardships in life can be overcome. He cannot always keep you from…

I’m about to try something I’ve not done before. For many years I occupied the Chair of Prayer at Southwestern Baptist Seminary and taught a very popular course on prayer each semester. I’ve also used those class notes to teach prayer on Sunday nights or Wednesday nights in churches where I served as Interim Pastor and furthermore, lead numerous prayer seminars in churches over the years. I’ve never used the notes to preach a series on prayer on Sunday mornings. Now I find myself serving as…

Every religion, in one way or another, is based on the good behavior/good works of the individual. Even Christianity, when practiced as a religion (living by rules and rituals – counting on traditions) is based on good works – being good enough (whatever that means) and better than average. But true Christianity is not based on your good works but on the good work of Jesus dying on the cross and rising to new life, defeating death. How can any amount of your good works match that? Gods not…

Every religion, in one way or another, is based on doing good works...and hoping you are above average. Zero confidence. When Christianity is perceived as a religion, what you must do to please God, then it to is based upon your good works. But true Christianity is about good news not good works. The good news of the good work of Jesus on the cross and bursting out of tomb – no amount of good works can match that. Good works. Or. Good News?

“The legacies of Billy Graham‘s ministry are many but perhaps none is greater than its demonstration that it is not the flames of hell but the triumphant love of God that defines & emboldens a Christian life.“ AndrewFinsteun @CTmagazine / @Pray4EveryHome @PrayCareShare @crazylove

Last Sunday our pastor preached on Psalm 133. And God spoke to me as he preached. I am reminded of something I once heard from a spellbinding preacher. He said God gave him his best sermons as He spoke to him when he was listening to other preachers preach. Well, in fact, although my preaching is now done with my pen, God still seems to be giving me sermons. And I would like to share this one with you. And my sharing will be most blessed, if at some point in…

Sometimes the student in a class who asks a lot of questions is labeled as a “wise guy.” Instead of that negative label, I believe that questions generally lead to better understanding. For example I believe good teachers encourage asking questions, and they generally respond positively to good questions from their students. I take the opportunity to ask a few questions in my Thinkables and will do so today. If I am doing a good job of encouraging you to think some new…

Recently my oncologist ask if I would add my experience to the ‘Patient Stories” on his website. I agreed, and began by looking at the stories already included there. I was amazed that out of 27 accounts only one had any mention of prayer or God or anything beyond this life. In 1 Corinthians 15:19 Paul tells believers that if our hope is only in this life we are of all people most miserable. This truth can be applied to cancer patients whether they are…
