A Community of Prayer Champions, Praying Churches, Prayed-for Communities

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."  -- 1 Timothy 2:1-4

For the past couple of years, I've been posting prayer requests from the Presidential Prayer Team, and I will continue that in this new discussion for 2018.

One of the most commonly quoted passages used to encourage us to pray for our leaders is 1 Timothy 2:1-2.  We understand that God calls us to pray for our leaders; elsewhere we're told that when kings rule in righteousness, the people are happy.

But there's more to it than that.  We need to pray for our leaders in such a way that their leadership results in open doors for the Gospel and for people to come to know Christ.  This is the goal of verse 4 - "all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth".  We are to pray with this end in mind.

So it's not just about praying that a bill will (or won't) pass.  It's about praying that the result of the bill will be to bring honor to God and open doors for the Gospel.  We often pray for the types of results that we can immediately see - that a candidate will or won't be elected, that a bill will pass or be repealed, etc.  But God calls us to pray with far more than that in mind.  Humility requires us to admit that we don't know what God knows about what might be best for our country, best for the people, etc.

So I encourage you, as you pray for our leaders, to pray with God's purposes in mind - not conservative purposes or liberal purposes but the purposes of the one to whom all history points.

The president and first family are scheduled to return to the White House this afternoon and are leaving from West Palm Beach, Florida. This will conclude the holiday vacation week for President Trump and the first family.

Beginning today, President Trump proclaimed January 2018 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. In his proclamation, the president said, “human trafficking is a modern form of the oldest and most barbaric type of exploitation.  It has no place in our world.” He also pledged “to do all in our power to end the horrific practice of human trafficking that plagues innocent victims around the world.”

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For discernment as to what the best steps are to end human trafficking.
  • For freedom for the countless people still in slavery in our modern world.

Each of these issues is complex and will take teamwork and dedication in order to resolve. To this end, the president needs prayer for each of them.

Senate Republicans are expected to meet with President Trump at the White House today. As the Republican senators look to overhaul immigration, they are meeting to ensure that they are on the same page as President Trump. “We're supposed to meet at the White House… a number of Senate Judiciary Committee members, to talk more about DACA because everybody is trying to figure out what the path forward is," Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said to reporters on Wednesday.

The president has been vocal in his criticisms of the existing immigration policies and he wants to see them overhauled. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is one of the primary topics of discussion and is being heavily evaluated. The president is expected to provide Republican senators with a list of national and border security priorities that need to be included with any deals brokered around DACA.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For the president as he leads in the push for overhauling immigration policies.
  • For unity with the president and the senators visiting the White House as they look to make significant changes to national security.

The president is at a Congressional Republican Leaders Retreat today. This retreat is at Camp David and is expected to continue over the weekend. In addition to laying out Republican goals and unifying the party agenda, many expect that the 2018 mid-term elections will be a topic of discussion. Republicans are looking to strategize for the election season and partner with the president in the campaigns.

Before boarding Marine One to travel to Camp David, the president commented on the progress he felt that Republican leaders have already made by passing the tax bill at the end of 2017. He finished his remarks by adding that the tax bill has already had major positive impact on the economy and stock market. He also believes that the retreat this weekend will further boost the economic growth, “We’re going to Camp David with a lot of the great Republican senators, and we’re making America great again.”

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For wisdom for the president as he evaluates many different perspectives on what the best options are for 2018.
  • For insight as the attending leaders act on behalf of the many that were unable to attend.
  • For the staff and administration as they facilitate the meetings that they would be able to provide the best and most accurate information.
  • For all of the leaders that they would seek God’s will in all decisions that they make for the nation.

Sunday, January 07, 2018

This weekend, the president and Republican leaders are discussing the agenda for 2018 at Camp David. On Saturday, they took some breaks to speak with the press about their agenda and what they hope to accomplish. The president spoke on welfare stating, "It's a subject that's very dear to our heart.” When asked about expected opposition from the Democratic party, he said, “We'll try and do something in a bipartisan way. Otherwise, we'll be holding it for a little bit later."
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell echoed the desire for cooperation in Congress by saying, "We hope that 2018'll be a year of more bipartisan cooperation." North Korea, national security, infrastructure, budget, and 2018 midterm election strategy are all part of discussions finishing today. It’s clear that our nation’s leaders see the need for collaboration and we pray that they are able to work together to accomplish the many complex issues facing the nation this year.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For the president as he desires to bring both parties together to accomplish the goals of 2018.

Zippy Duvall, president of the organization, said, “President Trump is fully aware of the economic difficulties farmers and ranchers have gone through these past few years. The economic issues he has outlined, including reform of our nation’s tax and regulatory systems, match many of the issues on Farm Bureau’s agenda.”

After visiting Nashville, President Trump will travel to Atlanta where he will attend the college football national championship game between Georgia and Alabama. In the morning, President Trump will meet with a bipartisan group of Senators to talk about the needs in overhauling immigration. As a budget deadline comes ever closer, many in congress believe that a resolution with DACA is a key component of any deal. Because of this, immigration reform is at the top of the list for congress and is a motivating factor in bringing together today’s meeting.

On Saturday, President Trump spoke that he, like many, wants to keep DACA in the process of reform, “We want DACA to happen… but we also want great security for our country."

Senate Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi showed optimism as well about the White House meeting, “I think the opportunity is there. I do think the president sincerely would like to deal with DACA.”

The Senate has until January 19th to negotiate a deal and vote on the budget to avoid a government shutdown.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For the president and senators that meet today, that they would be unified in their goals to do what is in the best interest for the nation.

The president, first lady, and son Barron traveled to Mar-a-Lago Friday evening and are expected to stay over the weekend. As Monday is the federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr., the president’s stay is expected to extend into late Monday or early Tuesday. On Friday, the president tweeted, “I encourage all Americans to observe this day with appropriate civic, community, and service activities in honor of Dr. King's life and legacy.”

Following the president’s physical on Friday, Dr. Ronny Jackson released a statement that said that the exam “went exceptionally well. The President is in excellent health and I look forward to briefing some of the details on Tuesday."

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For the first family to be able to spend quality time together and that their relationships would be strengthened.

President Trump will be spending time commemorating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. today. In the proclamation issued on Friday, the president said, “The Reverend’s devotion to fighting the injustice of segregation and discrimination ignited the American spirit of fraternity and reminded us of our higher purpose.” He added that “Dr. King’s peaceful crusade for justice and equality opened our Nation’s eyes to the humbling truth that we were very far from fulfilling our obligation to the promises set forth by our forebearers.

Because today is a federal holiday, most federal offices are closed, including both houses of Congress and the White House. They will have a short week to tackle the difficult and complicated budget next week and hammer out the details of the future of immigration reform.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For rest for the president and congressional leaders over the holiday.
