A Community of Prayer Champions, Praying Churches, Prayed-for Communities

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."  -- 1 Timothy 2:1-4

For the past couple of years, I've been posting prayer requests from the Presidential Prayer Team, and I will continue that in this new discussion for 2018.

One of the most commonly quoted passages used to encourage us to pray for our leaders is 1 Timothy 2:1-2.  We understand that God calls us to pray for our leaders; elsewhere we're told that when kings rule in righteousness, the people are happy.

But there's more to it than that.  We need to pray for our leaders in such a way that their leadership results in open doors for the Gospel and for people to come to know Christ.  This is the goal of verse 4 - "all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth".  We are to pray with this end in mind.

So it's not just about praying that a bill will (or won't) pass.  It's about praying that the result of the bill will be to bring honor to God and open doors for the Gospel.  We often pray for the types of results that we can immediately see - that a candidate will or won't be elected, that a bill will pass or be repealed, etc.  But God calls us to pray with far more than that in mind.  Humility requires us to admit that we don't know what God knows about what might be best for our country, best for the people, etc.

So I encourage you, as you pray for our leaders, to pray with God's purposes in mind - not conservative purposes or liberal purposes but the purposes of the one to whom all history points.

President Trump is scheduled to deliver remarks at the Latino Coalition Legislative Summit today. The summit's main focus is expected to be on how to enable small businesses and entrepreneurs to grow. Several panelists are scheduled to speak on how federal regulations are changing and how business leaders can best operate within them. Because of the theme, President Trump will likely speak on the major tax overhaul and how it affects Hispanic businesses.

In advance of the summit, White House Director of Media Affairs Helen Aguirre Ferre said, "Economic and national security are of great interest to the Hispanic community and President Trump looks forward to speaking to the members of the Latino Coalition about his policies." The president will give his remarks at 12 PM (EST).

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For wisdom and clarity as the president speaks at the summit.
  • For those attending the summit, that God would use them in a positive way to help shape and grow the nation’s economy.
  • For safety for the president as he travels today.

At the time of publication, the White House has not released a public schedule for President Trump. With the news of a meeting with North Korea still dominating the news cycle, the president spoke about the efforts being made as well as the upcoming plans, “I think North Korea is going to go very well, I think we will have tremendous success. I think this is going to be something very successful. We have a lot of support.” He added that the meeting is contingent on a halt in nuclear testing, which reports indicate that North Korea is willing to do.

In the coming week, along with continuing to plan for the meeting with North Korea, the president will continue efforts to address gun violence, make efforts to boost economic growth through domestic and international relationships, and work on a number of other pressing issues.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For safety for the president as he travels this weekend.
  • For rest for the president that he may go into the week feeling rejuvenated.
  • For wisdom as the president makes decisions that shape the future of the nation.
  • For God’s will to be accomplished through the words and actions of the president.

President Trump is traveling to San Diego, California, today. He will be inspecting prototypes for the border wall that have been under construction for the past year, speaking with troops, and then attending a donor event in the evening. This visit will be the first time the president has traveled to California since his campaign two years ago.

When questioned about the president’s dedication to securing America’s borders with the border wall, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said that the president campaigned extensively about the need for the wall, and now, in the midst of concerns, still believes that it is a necessary step in bolstering border security.

The president will be spending the night in California and will travel back Wednesday morning.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For wisdom as the president as he reviews the options for border security and that he would make the decisions that are in the best interest of the nation.

At the time of publishing, the White House has not released a public schedule for the president’s Saturday. President Trump signed legislation on Friday that will go into effect today that allows U.S. officials to travel to Taiwan to meet with their Taiwanese counterparts. As China does not recognize Taiwan as an independent nation, this move will likely add strain between the U.S. and China.

This weekend also comes on the heels of calls between President Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in and meetings between U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono, both regarding the upcoming talks between the U.S. and North Korea. It is likely that there will be continuing efforts this weekend to continue to shape foreign policy and create an environment of peace in the region.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For the president and administration as they work to do what is in the best interest of the nation.

  • For wisdom and discernment for the president as he continues to shape foreign policy.

  • For peace to come to the Korean peninsula.

President Trump is staying in the White House over the weekend. There are no public events scheduled at this time, but the president often meets with various leaders or attends functions outside of the White House, so his schedule is subject to change.

The president will be resting in preparation for next week. He is expected to announce more details on tariffs with China, continue preparing for the upcoming talks between the U.S. and North Korea, moving ahead on border security concerns, as well as addressing a number of other pressing issues.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For the president to be able to rest this weekend and head into next week rejuvenated.
  • For wisdom in the continuing efforts towards global peace.
  • For discernment in decisions that have an impact on trade and foreign policy.

Tuesday, March 20, 2018

President Trump has a full schedule today which begins with the first public event at noon. He will meet with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and they will have a working lunch together. Saudi Arabia has stated concern over the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and even called the original deal “a flawed agreement.” In addition, Saudi Arabian leadership believes that Iran’s actions are destabilizing the region. Region security is expected to be a primary topic of conversation. The president Trump and Prince Mohammad will also likely discuss ways to boost the economic relationship between the two nations.

In the afternoon, President Trump is hosting a roundtable discussion with law enforcement officials on sanctuary cities. The president would like to assess the potential risks and dangers as well as brainstorm solutions for addressing the issue.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For guidance for the president as he meets with Prince Mohammad concerning mutual issues that affect both nations.
  • For wisdom in determining the next steps in shaping U.S. foreign policy.
  • For open-mindedness as the president leads the discussion on sanctuary cities and hears a variety of different perspectives.
  • For discernment as he makes decisions as a result of the roundtable discussion.

Supreme Court to Hear Free Speech Case

About Abortion Disclosures at Pro-Life Centers

The Supreme Court on Tuesday will hear whether California is violating free speech rights by forcing pro-life pregnancy centers to post information about the availability of state-funded abortions.

California has public programs that provide immediate free or low-cost access to comprehensive family planning services, prenatal care and abortion for eligible women.

The case was brought by the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, which operates pregnancy centers nationwide, including about 130 in California. The group says California’s law forces them to promote a medical procedure they oppose.

A decision is expected by the end of June and could trigger legal changes in other states, such as Hawaii and Illinois that have similar laws. Depending on the outcome, reproductive rights advocates may seek to overturn pro-life laws that require doctors to tell women that abortions lead to mental health problems or breast cancer, disclosures that abortion advocates say are false.

As the Lord Leads, please pray:

  • For wisdom for the justices on the Supreme Court as they hear the oral arguments on free speech rights.
  • That the justices to do what is right in interpreting the law.
  • For clarity and openness for those speaking before the Supreme Court so that the Court would have a clear and full understanding of the issue at hand.
  • For discernment for the justices as they evaluate the full ramifications of any decision that they make.
