Indonesia: Gearing up for the World Prayer Assembly

Christian leaders from across the globe will gather at the World Prayer Assembly in Jakarta, Indonesia, on May 14-18, 2012. This historic event will take place as millions of Indonesians are connected in prayer for their nation. 24/7 ‘prayer towers’ are operating in many cities in Indonesia and over 200,000 ‘child intercessors’ are committed in prayer for their nation. All of this in the largest Muslim-populated country. The Lord is moving in this vast archipelago of 17,000 islands with many diverse people groups. The Church has united in an extraordinary way, creating an environment for spiritual and societal transformation that is spreading across the region.

Thousands of prayer, mission and marketplace leaders, along with on-fire youth and children, will gather in Jakarta to seek the Lord together for His strategies of ‘prayer-action’ for the world. What’s unique is that the WPA will be led inter-generationally, with youth and children helping to facilitate plenary and other sessions. This, the organizers believe, will “help launch the next generation of men and women of God to lead the prayer and mission movements as modern Josephs, Esthers, Daniels, and Deborahs that God will use to impact the nations.”

"15 million Christians will adopt their own street in prayer."

On May 17 there will be a gathering in the national stadium in Jakarta with 100,000 others, including 20,000 children and 20,000 youth, with simultaneous gatherings in 300-400 cities of Indonesia, connected by live television. Tens of millions more will join in across the world by satellite TV and internet streaming. Also a ‘My Home’ initiative will be launched in which an estimated 15 million Christians will adopt their own streets for prayer, followed by loving service to their neighbors such as planting trees, cleaning up garbage, etc. This will go on for the next two years. They were inspired by word of a similar prayer effort for Newark, New Jersey in the USA, one of the most dangerous cities in the USA until united prayer contributed to a large drop in the crime rate between 2006 and 2008.

Global: A prayer movement among children and youth

One of the most exciting developments globally is the emerging prayer movement among children and teenagers. In many nations God is pouring out his Spirit of intercession on a new generation, leading to changed lives and a dramatic advance of his Kingdom in new places.

Whether they meet in creative prayer rooms, class rooms, on the streets, or in fields, this generation is eager to spend time in God’s presence. Praying from the high places, these young people speak peace and blessing over their cities, and are willing to plead with God for the needs of their generation. “We need to know God and fall in love with Him while we are young, so that later on, when it’s harder, when there’s persecution, when there’s trials, we really have a faith that’s strong, to hold us through.”

Remarkable stories of prayer on DVD!

Joel News International has been chronicling these stories from around the globe of what might well be the most remarkable prayer awakening of the church in recorded history. A number of encouraging stories of how God uses children and teenagers in prayer is recorded by Media Village Productions on an inspiring high-quality DVD.

This month we send this DVD as a present to everyone who supports this movement with a special donation. We have only a limited number of copies available and send them on a first come, first serve basis.

Egypt and Myanmar: Children in prayer

Every year in Egypt conferences are being held to equip children in prayer. The organizers report that up to 1,500 children attended: “They showed appetite to read the Bible, and God did speak to them through dreams and visions. At the national prayer conference many of them were being filled with the Holy Spirit.”

In Myanmar a ‘children in prayer’ conference was held with the aim to gather children across the nation in their cities and areas to regularly teach them about the power of prayer and enable them to pray with each other.

Dramatic transformation among Muslim peoples

“Dramatic transformation is the key to rapid multiplication of churches among Muslims,” says Jerry Trousdale of missions organization CityTeam International.

He relates the story how one time their West African ministry partners were having their midday prayers, when they suddenly were surrounded by Muslim leaders. The team had been seeing breathtaking breakthroughs among highly resistant Muslim peoples, so they had anticipated some opposition. They had reason to be fearful, but kept praying. Surprisingly, the Muslims just stood around them observing the proceedings and making no signs of hostile intentions.

When the Christian leaders finished praying, the group approached and turned out to be a delegation of Muslim civic leaders from a distant region. They had come with their imam and with a request. They said: “We have not come to harm you, but we beg you - could you please send us the storytellers?” They meant the Christian workers who were making disciples by telling stories. The Muslim leaders from this community had observed other communities in their area that had become Christian, and they had noticed a dramatic change in people’s lives. They wanted the same thing in their community!

In this week's edition of Joel News International more about this encouraging story. We also answer the question: what does transformation look like among Muslim-background believers? For the full edition you can sign up here.

Ordinary people and a mighty God

God often uses ordinary people to do His extraordinary work. It's a concept that Angus Buchan knows well. He started out as a maize and cattle farmer in South Africa. Now he hosts an annual gathering known as the Mighty Men Conference. More than 400,000 men and boys gather every year for the event to worship and connect with God. That’s more than the whole South African defense force put together.

In this week's edition of Joel News International more about this encouraging story. Also: the miracle of microloans in Ethiopia and religious extremists in India encounter Jesus. For the full edition you can sign up here.

How NASA inspired a church's missions strategy

Ten years ago Rick Warren, senior pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, and author of ‘The Purpose-Driven Life’, launched his PEACE plan. He wanted his church to help solve the world’s five biggest problems: spiritual emptiness, self-serving leadership, poverty, disease and illiteracy.

Therefore the PEACE plan mobilizes churches to work together to: plant churches that promote reconciliation, equip servant leaders, assist the poor, care for the sick and educate the next generation.

“Our goal is ultimately to get the Gospel to the 3,000 unengaged tribes of this world that have no Bible, no believers and no Body of Christ. They are small - between 5,000 people to no more than 100,000 - so I call them the final frontier,” says Warren. “It’s kind of like going to the moon. In fact, we actually copied our missions strategy from NASA.”

In this week's edition of Joel News International more about this encouraging story. Also: how the Japanese church closest to the nuclear power plant Fukushima survived the tsunami disaster and found new hope. For the full edition you can sign up here.

How a genuine revival impacted Bolivia

In 1995, Julio Ruibal, a prominent charismatic evangelist from Bolivia who lived and worked in Cali, Colombia, was martyred for his faith. The story of his courageous ministry of unity and opposition against Cali’s drug cartels is chronicled in the well-know Transformations video, produced by The Sentinel Group. However, less known internationally is his role in a genuine revival that impacted Bolivia in the 1970s.

In this week's edition of Joel News International the encouraging story how hundreds of thousands of people came to Christ and impacted a nation. For the full edition you can sign up here.
