A Community of Prayer Champions, Praying Churches, Prayed-for Communities

Many of the books written on prayer seem as if they  were written from ivory towers or desert monasteries. They're not bad books by any means--but they talk about prayer in a way that feels very far removed from the real world I live in, and frankly, I leave some of those books feeling defeated and discouraged.  Paul E. Miller's A Praying Life, (http://www.navpress.com/product/9781600063008/) however, is a refreshing exception.  Miller and his wife have six children, including a daughter with special needs. Paul writes from real life, and teaches us to pray where we live, too, in the messiness of ordinary lives filled with kids, jobs, ministries, and other people's constant needs and demands. He doesn't offer shortcuts, but he does offer real encouragement and practical tools to grow deeper in an intimate conversation with God. I especially like his chapters on cynicism in Part 3, and his very practical prayer tools and ideas in Part 5.

Has anyone else read this book? What are your impressions?

Last spring my church held a seminar using material from Paul's book.  We plan a follow-up in 2011.  You are right, many of the books I have read on prayer do not quite fit with the reality of my life.  I gain wisdom, insight and renewed purpose, but I also feel inadequate and unworthy at times because they do seem so lofty and removed - perhaps because many were written so very long ago.  A Praying Life however is right in the trenches with me.  It sits right on my desk, along with my Bible, for easy reference.  Currently my favorite is Section 4 where Paul talks about life as story.  Honestly though, I discover brilliance every time I open it's pages.

I too have enjoyed the way Paul Miller has been able to bring a fresh approach to the topic of prayer.  I agree with your comments 100%.
